Momentum and Impulse

Momentum and Impulse. Introduction. Momentum… is a property of moving objects depends on MASS & VELOCITY p = mv Units: kg ·m /s is a VECTOR Direction is always SAME AS VELOCITY. 2,000 kg car at 5m/s. 30 kg soccer player at 2 m/s. 10,000 kg bus at 1m/s. 60 kg soccer

  1. Momentum and Impulse

  2. Introduction • Momentum… • is a property of moving objects • depends on MASS & VELOCITY • p = mv • Units: kg·m/s • is a VECTOR • Direction is always SAME AS VELOCITY

  3. 2,000 kg car at 5m/s 30 kg soccer player at 2 m/s 10,000 kg bus at 1m/s 60 kg soccer ref at 0 m/s Comparing Momentum Which has more momentum? Neither Player The player has a momentum of 60 kg·m/s while the ref has none!!! Both have a momentum of 10,000 kg·m/s!!!

  4. Examples • Determine the momentum of a 1,000 kilogram car traveling with a speed of 5 meters per second. • How fast must a 500kg motorcycle travel in order to have the same momentum?

  5. Impulse • Impulse… • is A CHANGE IN MOMENTUM • Encountered when changes in motion occur Units: Ns

  6. EXAMPLE #1 A 60 kilogram drag racer accelerates from 0 to 148 meters per second in 5 seconds. Calculate the change in momentum encountered by the racer. Determine the average force exerted on the racer during this acceleration.

  7. EXAMPLE #2 A human cannonball flies into a waiting net and comes to rest in 0.5 seconds. If he experiences an impulse of 825 Ns. Calculate the force the net exerts on him. If the human cannonball MISSED the net and landed on concrete; determine the force he experiences if he stops in 0.05 seconds

  8. SUMMARY • Momentum is a…? • Equation for Momentum • Units for Momentum • Impulse is a…? • Definition of Impulse? • Equation for Impulse? • Units for Impulse?
