  1. X-ray induced synthesis of 8H diamond Zhongwu Wang (CHESS, NY),DMR-0225180 Research: Carbon shows a very wide variety of phases, densities, and bonding types – resulting in a rich variety of physical and chemical properties. New carbon nanotube phases, recently discovered, may lead to many new and promising applications. In this work, scientists have discovered how to synthesize stable phases of the 8H carbon polytype using high-intensity high-energy x-rays produced by the powerful synchrotron source at CHESS. 8H diamond provides new opportunities for making superhard materials with technological applications.
