  3. Office Hours • M 4-5:30PM, Tu 3-4PM, W 3-4PM. • TA office hours – Th 2-3:30PM (Bat 345) • By appointment. • Office 424 Rogers. • E-mail Policy - No HW/technical questions!

  4. Prerequisites • Stat 314 or equivalent will be needed. We’ll review some of it. • Familiarity with using Windows based software. • Statgraphics and Excel will be used in labs. • Can also use for homework (more details later).

  5. Textbook • Montgomery, D.C., (2013). Introduction to Statistical Quality Control – 7th Edition, John Wiley and Sons Inc. • Good points • Good combination of practical methods and why they work (theory) • Many examples • A good reference for practicing engineers • Well known author in the field • Text website with supplementary material • Use of prior editions • HW problems and data – numbering, new problems • Check reading assignments in syllabus

Exams & Homework • Homework • About 6 to 7 homework assignments will be given (as dictated by class progress). • Group study is encouraged but splitting up assignments is not. • A random selection of problems will be graded. • Feedback through grading, numerical solutions (when possible), office hours • Homework is due at the beginning of class before the lecture starts. Assignments turned in after this time but before 5PM the same day will be penalized 20%. Assignments will not be accepted after 5PM on the due date. • Exams • Open book and open note exams – No laptop computers permitted, or other devices that can access the web. No other electronic communication devices permitted. Students must do their own work on exams. • Based on homework, lecture material, labs, text reading.

  8. Exams & Homework • The use of software • Statistical software and Excel may be used to complete homework and lab assignments • These tools will not be available during exams • Be able to reproduce what the software is generating • Understand software output

  9. Labs • There will be seven lab assignments • Three lab sections • Tu 2-4, Th 4-6, Fr 2-4

  10. Labs • Labs are run by the course TA. • The Th/Fr labs start this week. • Assignments to be completed in lab • Switching lab sections • In special cases • Requires Instructor or TA approval • Lab attendance taken

  14. Lecture Format • The first part of class will be devoted to questions. • Unreasonably long questions will be handled one on one. • If I don’t know the answer, I’ll get it for the class by the next lecture. • Lecture • Ask questions • End of Class – Will try to leave time for questions

Lecture Format • Material will be delivered on PowerPoint slides using a tablet PC. • Material will be added to the slides during class. • Examples will be completed electronically on PowerPoint slides. • There will be periodic in-class problem solving sessions. • Solutions completed electronically on slides. • Minor changes to the slides may be made just before class. • All added (hand written) material is your responsibility – They will not be available on the website.

  16. Class Rules • No newspaper reading during class. • No working on other class assignments. • No web surfing, texting, etc. • Turn off phones and other communication devices unless needed for special circumstances (discussed with me). • Practice common sense and courtesy.

  17. Pro-School Courses • Judge your interest in IE/MfgE • Foundation for thinking like an IE • Not technical training • E.g., how to use a specific software package

  18. Recommendations for Doing Well • Attend class and pay attention – industry prep • Read material before (and after) the topic is covered in class • Start homework assignments early • Do not approach problem solutions as procedures (unless instructed) • Example • Ask questions in class and during office hours

  19. Information Sheet • Due on Oct. 1rst (this Wednesday) • Available on course website. • Turn the paper sheet in at class. • Counts towards class participation. • It helps me get your names right.
