  1. The Dark Side of a Facebook Page: Defamation of Character. Megan Hinckley Human Rights in the Digital Age June 15th, 2010

  2. Things to Talk About • Defaming of character • Status updates • Facebook group pages • Fake facebook profiles

  3. Sources • http://www.crikey.com.au/2008/08/07/facebook-how-to-defame-someone-without-really-trying/ • http://blog.braonnd-yourself.com/brand-yourselfcom/dt-let-your-personal-brand-identity-become-too-personal/ • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bar-tender/2009/09/facebook-lawsuit-mom-son-say-pranksters-setup-racist-sexual-profile.html

  4. How To Defame Someone Without Really Trying. • Facebook can be an excellent tool to defame a person. • Victims of the “attacks” are now fighting back in an effort to stop future attacks. • Paula Wreidt • Had an affair and attacked by the family, now in the hospital suffering from severe depression. • Matthew Firsht • Grant Raphael, who fell out of touch with Matthew because of a business deal, slandered his name all over facebook. “Has Matthew Firsht lied to you?” • Matthew Firsht sued Grant Raphael for misuse of private information, breach of his right to privacy and defamation.

  5. Don’t Let Your Personal Brand Become Too Personal • Be wary of your blog personality • While a creative outlet is great, be aware of who can see your blog, twitter page or facebook page. The internet is a public domain. • Don’t tweet your every move • “No one needs to know you’ve gone to Haps for the 3rd time this week.” • Save the life story for a book • Remember why you’re there • Social mediums such as facebook are supposed to be healthy, positive ways to stay in touch and make connections.

  6. Mom and Son Suing over Facebook Page • A mom and son in Chicago are suing four other kids for setting up a facebook page for the son with racial and sexual statements. • Under “About Me” were racial comments about President Obama, sexual preference and saying the young man was a homosexual and engaged in sexual acts with other males. • The page is now removed, but the boy is concerned about all of the “friends” who didn’t know it was fake and he is also worried about his reputation being harmed and how it may affect the future such as college and college athletic departments.
