  1. Effective Highlighting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing 8th

  2. Process of Research Finding sources Highlighting Sources Summarizing Paraphrasing

  3. High Lighting • Read through your sources keeping your topic/questions in mind. • Look for key words and phrases that correspond with your topic/questions • Highlight those key words and phrases. • Do NOT highlight entire sentences or paragraphs!!

  4. Summarizing • Summary: a shortened version of the text that tells the key points in your own words - must be much shorter than the article - does not include opinions about the meaning

  5. Summarizing • After reading and highlighting the article, get a notecard. • On the notecard, write in your own words the information or main ideas you took from your reading. • Remember, should be much shorter than original article - page long article = about paragraph summary - paragraph = sentence or two summary

  6. Your Research • Read the article. • While reading, highlight key words or phrases that relate to your topic. • After reading and highlighting, take a notecard. • Put a corresponding number in the corner of the notecard and the first page of the article. • On the notecard, make a citation for the article. • On the notecard, make a summary for the article.

  7. Paraphrasing • Paraphrase = putting a passage or quote of a single idea from you article into your own words - This is what you are going to put on your poster

  8. Paraphrasing • Based on summary and highlighting, find the specific ideas you want to share with your reader • Put the information into your own words - This can be tricky. You need to change words and adjust sentence structure. - Looking away from the material can helpful. • Compare your paraphrase to the material to make sure you included all main ideas yet did not plagiarize

  9. Plagiarism • Plagiarism: the practice of taking someone else’s work and passing it off as one’s own - unless you are using quotes and telling where the quote came from, the information needs to be in your own words
