HODs participation & socio-economic status • In 2008, 32% of visitors came from C2DE socio-economic groups (in 2005, 26%). • In 2008, 30% of respondents had not visited any heritage sites in the last 12 months. • 80% would definitely visit again (84% C2DE) • 85% would recommend visit to friends and family (89% C2DE)

  3. Heritage perception & socio-economic status • 94% of C2DE visitors felt that HODs made them feel more aware of our shared heritage (84% of ABC1 visitors) • 94% of C2DE visitors felt that HODs made them more proud of the culture, history and heritage in this country

  4. Heritage Open Days’ USP HODs opens buildings free of charge which are otherwise closed to the public or charge for admission and offers tours and other interpretative events that bring to life local history and culture.

  5. USP & barriers to participation Heritage Open Days is: • free • interesting & stimulating • Local Eliminating three factors which are traditionally identified as barriers to participation. However, free access was a major motivating factor for only 6% of C2DE visitors.

  6. Diversity of places & events Buildings and places of every age, style and function take part, ranging from churches to castles, town halls to tithe barns, bingo halls to factories, temples to tunnels, sports clubs to offices, private homes to gardens. It is not only about buildings, there are events celebrating all aspects of people’s cultural heritage, the things that make up people’s identity.

  7. Drivers for diversification • English Heritage Outreach team, dedicating 50 percent of their time to HODs • Civic Trust HLF-supported education programme until 2008 • Heritage Open Days’ grassroots movement: 1,600 local organisers and 41,000 volunteers

  8. Local volunteers, local visitors • In 2008, 47% of visitors came from within 15 minute radius. • Local marketing & PR: newspapers, leaflets, posters, banners and balloons. • Local people who take ownership of the scheme and share their passion and knowledge make the built and historic environment relevant, accessible and human.
