  6. Key Words in the Romans Series Freedom –The Gospel of Jesus Christ makes possible a brand new way of life for the believer – life lived abundantly in and through the power of the Holy Spirit

  7. Freedom from… • Condemnation(8:1-4) • The control by the power of sin (8:5-14) • The fear of abandonment (8:15-17)

  8. Freedom to… • Claim the promises of God (8:18-25) • Realize the purposes of God (8:26-30) • Assured of the protection of God (8:31-39)

  9. Freedom from… • Condemnation(8:1-4)

  10. 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

  11. For Those Who are in Christ Jesus, we are… • Redeemed (Romans 3:24) • Alive to God (Romans 6:11) • Possessors of Eternal Life (Romans 6:23) • Free From the Law of Sin and Death (Romans 8:2) • Members of One Spiritual Body (Romans 12:5) • Sharers in Christ’s Work (Romans 16:3,9) • Sanctified (I Corinthians 1:2) • Recipients of Grace (I Corinthians 1:4) • Secure in Death (I Corinthians 15:18) • Bold to Speak the Truth (2 Corinthians 2:17) • New Creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17) • Free (Galatians 2:4) • Justified (Galatian 2:17)

  12. For Those Who are in Christ Jesus, we are… • Recipients of the Blessings Given to Abraham (Galatians 3:14) • Sons of God (Galatians 3:26) • One with Others Regardless of Race, Gender, or Social Condition (Galatians 3:28) • Recipients of Every Spiritual Blessing in Heaven (Ephesians 3:6) • Seated in the Heavens (Ephesians 2:6) • Created for Good Works (Ephesians 2:10) • Brought Near to God (Ephesians 2:13) • Partakers with Jesus of the Promises (Ephesians 3:6) • Forgiven by God (Ephesians 4:32) • Encouraged (Philippians 2:1)

  13. For Those Who are in Christ Jesus, we are… • At Peace (Philippians 4:7) • Provided for (Philippians 4:19) • Anticipating the Resurrection of our Bodies (I Thessalonians 4:16) • Overseen by Providence (I Thessalonians 5:18) • Alive(2 Timothy 1:1) • Saved(2 Timothy 2:10)

  14. Freedom from… • The control by the power of sin (8:5-14)

  15. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

  16. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

  17. Freedom from… • The fear of abandonment (8:15-17)

  18. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

  19. Freedom to… • Claim the promises of God (8:18-25) • Realize the purposes of God (8:26-30) • Assured of the protection of God (8:31-39)

  20. Freedom to… • Claim the promises of God (8:18-25)

  21. 18I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 thatthe creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

  22. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

  23. Freedom to… • Claim the promises of God (8:18-25) • Promise of future glory (18-21) • Promise of full realization of what we can only taste now (22-23) • Promise of patience being rewarded(24-25)

  24. Freedom to… • Realize the purposes of God (8:26-30)

  25. 26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, whohave been called according to his purpose.

  26. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

  27. Freedom to… • Realize the purposes of God (8:26-30) • The Spirit of God intercedes for us according to His will and purpose (26-27) • Our new life in the Spirit is based on God’s purposes and it includes suffering (28) • His purpose is for us to be conformed to the likeness of His Son, and adopted into His family (29-30)

  28. Freedom to… • Assured of the protection of God (8:31-39)

  29. 31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

  30. 36 As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long;we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  31. Freedom to… • Assured of the protection of God (8:31-39) • 5 Critical Questions • If God is for us, who can be against us? • He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? • Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? • Who is he that condemns? • Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

  32. In Christ • I am free from any condemnation • I have kept the righteous requirements of the law • I am obligated to be led by the Spirit • I am a child of God and a coheir with Jesus • I will be redeemed from the curse of creation • I am certain of my eternal glorification • I fear nothing in this world or out of this world

  33. Freedom from… • Condemnation(8:1-4) • The control by the power of sin (8:5-14) • The fear of abandonment (8:15-17) • Freedom to… • Claim the promises of God (8:18-25) • Realize the purposes of God (8:26-30) • Assured of the protection of God (8:31-39)
