Explanation • Today you will work on the poetry analysis slides • You need to find 4-6 devices • Explaining the PURPOSE of the device and not simply pointing it out is the most important part of these slides • For example: Pointing out a metaphor is nice and good, but explaining WHY the author used the metaphor is more important

  3. War isn’t always what you think… • “Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge” • Simile and Irony • The simile gives us an image of the troops • The irony transforms what we normally think of as troops

  4. Experiencing war will change what you think about it… • “If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs” • Sound imagery • Owens wants the reader/listen to be disgusted; he wants us to be horrified so that we are in the correct position for him to tell us that “war isn’t necessarily honorable”
