  1. WORLD OCEAN NETWORK APPEAL • TO MOBILISE THE GENERAL PUBLIC • FOR ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE • Oceans Day in Copenhagen • December 14, 2009

  2. WORLD OCEAN NETWORK, An international network of 400 aquariums, science and education centers to raise public awareness on the importance of sustainable management of the ocean. Engaging with and educating hundreds of million visitors per year, inspiring citizens to act in their everyday lives

  3. A LIFE-SUPPORT SYSTEM • Ocean regulates the climate • Ocean absorbs 30 % of our CO2 emissions • Plancton releases in the atmosphere more oxygen then all the world’s forests

  4. Our daily choices can directly influence over 50% of GHG emissions

  5. WON endorses WAZA and EUAC statements • “Through our organisations, we, directors of the international zoo and aquarium community, collectively engage with and educate 600 million visitors each year. • We send an urgent message to world leaders: • “Agreement in Copenhagen to reduce atmospheric CO2 to the safe level of <350 ppm is the only way to give the international conservation community a real chance to manage the negative effects of climate change on the natural world of the ocean. • Through concerted and immediate action, this target is achievable. To avoid potentially catastrophic consequences for humanity and wildlife, it is essential.”

  6. WON appeals • To support, develop and implement public awareness programmes on climate change and its effects • To facilitate public access to information on climate change, and to promote public participation in developing adequate responses. • To take into cognizance in all the policy planning for climate change, that oceans and their resources are vital to all humanity and everyone has the right to benefit from them and also has a responsibility to look after them.

  7. WON appeals • To consider the vulnerability of coastal and island communities to adverse impacts of climate change and devise strategies to mitigate the impacts on sensitive and vulnerable regions and communities. • To provide adequate support to education and public awareness programmes in order to make the public prepared towards adapting to adverse impacts of climate change. • To integrate sustainability concerns into development strategies in line with the objectives of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

  8. And we commit to doing more…
