  1. PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE

  2. Agenda • What is Debate? • Why should I Debate? • How could the Debate Team operate? • What will happen in the future?

  3. What is Debate? Debate is using logic to convince someone to support your opinion. The type of Debate we will be using is called “Public Forum.” (Details to be provided later) Debate is not yelling at each other and trying to convince someone who can’t be convinced. It’s taking a judge through logical analysis so they understand why your position is better and will give you the win.

  4. On the other hand, Debate is not boring as it may sound from this description. When you think of debate do not think of stiff fact-rambling nerds; think of charismatic witty speakers like on television When debating you must be able to take both sides of an argument (Pro/Con). In one debate you may be arguing for the Death Penalty while in another you may be arguing against the Death Penalty.

  5. Why should I Debate? There are a million and one reasons why you should debate ranging from it takes away the fear of public speaking to it makes you more organized. • TWO BIG REASONS ARE: • It looks great for colleges: Putting down “3 years of Debate, placed 15th in Nationals” will look amazing to any school you apply to. • It’s fun!!!

  6. How could the Debate Team operate? Meetings will be held once a week after school. Each week will include fun activities such as mock debates and other fun speaking games, as well as preparing for upcoming tournaments

  7. You will need to elect a board to help run the team in the coming weeks. You will need a: President- in charge of all meetings Treasurer- manage finances Secretary- make sure everyone knows when the meetings happening Vice President of Public Forum- keep track of who is competing.

  8. What do I do now? Keep coming to meetings and bring your friends. The bottom line is that Debate Teams are more fun with more people. Some teams such as Baltimore City College and Thomas Johnson have as many as 40 members while other schools such as Catonsville have a mere 5 members. Whatever the size of you team things are always more fun with your friends so bring them
