  1. Coping As A Member Of The Minority

  2. How The Majority & Minority Differ The Majority • Served by interests…maintained by tolerance • An “agenda” to be accomplished at all costs (politically, socially, economically) • Principle “goes out the window” if it doesn’t serve the agenda

  3. How The Majority & Minority Differ The Majority Homosexuals Ù Lifestyle is an “alternative” HumanistsÙ Man is his “own god” EvolutionistsÙ World is self-created…no God FeministsÙ Men = chauvinists…deny women MaterialistsÙ Prosper at all costs

  4. How The Majority & Minority Differ The Minority • Driven by principles that don’t change over time (objective standard) • Only “agenda” = adherence to deeply held and respected principles (e.g. what the Lord says) • Main concern = never violate principles (no “situation ethics”)

  5. How The Minority “Copes” Num 14 • Events from Num 13:1-29 • Caleb’s words Num 13:30 • Other spies’ reply Num 13:31-33 • People’s response Num 14:1-4 • Joshua & Caleb’s reply Num 14:7-9 • God’s words Num 14:24

  6. How The Minority “Copes” Num 14 • Caleb had a “different spirit” • Nothing miraculous • Courage, determination 2 Tim 1:6-7 • Everyone would rather be in the majority • Caleb would have liked that, too • When we’re not, we have to “cope”

  7. How The Minority “Copes” Num 14 • Perspective doesn’t change just because they don’t have the numbers • Caleb’s and our “spirit” 2 Tim 1:6-7 • PowerÙ the gospel Rom 1:16 • LoveÙ motivation Eph 3:14-19 • Self-ControlÙ endurance 1 Cor 9:24-27

  8. How The Minority “Copes” Num 14 • Perspective doesn’t change just because they don’t have the numbers • Caleb’s and our “spirit” 2 Tim 1:6-7 • If we change our “spirit” we stop coping… we have joined “The Majority” (swallowed our principle on some issue)

  9. How Caleb’s Story Ends Josh 14:6-15 • 45 years since Num 13-14 • Caleb is now 85…has the same spirit !! • Caleb did not hold a grudge while he had to suffer along side the “The Majority” • He patiently endured, keeping his “spirit” • He kept believing God’s promise 2 Pet 3:3-4, 9

  10. How Caleb’s Story Ends Josh 14:6-15 • “Give me this mountain” v. 12 • He knew he could accomplish the task • Not because of who he was • All because of Who he served…whether he was in “The Majority” or “The Minority” • His beliefs never changed Num 14:8-9

  11. Conclusion • Coping requires Caleb’s kind of “spirit” • We need a strong dose of it because of… • …peer pressure to conform • …the supposed success of “The Majority” (political, social, religious)

  12. Conclusion • The truth is…if we are on God’s side, we’re already in “The Real Majority” • We may have to wander through our own wilderness • Remember…we have the Promised Land ahead • We’ve come this far…don’t quit now !!
