  2. Johannes Kepler • Johannes is an astrologist. He made one of the greatest discoveries in the world of astrology. He famously discovered the three laws of planetary motion. He also discovered how did the moon influence the waves of the earth, which is with the moon’s gravity. • He was a religious man and usually giving credit to god when making a good discovery. • He also made an improvement to the refracting telescope, which he gave credit to the another astrologer Galileo.

  3. His three laws of planetary motion • The orbit of a planet and the sun is an ellipse with the sun’s center of mass at one focus. • A line joining a planet and the sun sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time. • The squares of the periods of the planets are proportional to the cubes of their major axes. • Though a bit hard to understand, it is mostly about how two objects in space that is in orbit with each other.

  4. Richard courant • Richard courant is a German mathematician. He was a math professor of the university of New York. He made one the best research center of applied mathematics there, called Courant institute of mathematics sciences. • He also made a great text book which is still in print today called “what is mathematics?”. • He was also famous for his finite element method, which is for finding the force needed to break something when you are dealing with an irregular object that is way to hard for any theories to solve

  5. Application of finite element method • This is a great example of a simple usage of finite element method. An irregular shape is broken into triangles. But you can notice that in the rice coloured part, the triangles are completely different from the others, which make the equation inaccurate.

Comparison • First of all, they are two completely different type of mathematicians. • Richard is an expert of applied mathematics while Johannes Kepler is an expert of astrology. • To me, I think that Johannes is more important than Richard courant since the discovery that Johannes made affected the whole world! He ended a great argument with science and religious thought that went on for a long time on how planets move. But for Richard Courant, he only made a new theory, there are loads of mathematicians like him.
