  1. Khan Academy: Online Learning PersonalizedLorianna Mann Article written by SominiSenguptahttp://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/05/technology/khan-academy-blends-its-youtube-approach-with-classrooms.html?pagewanted=all

  2. What is Khan Academy? • Educational website with more than 4,000 micro lectures • Created by ninth grade math teacher Jesse Roe • Each video is stored on Youtube • Subjects include mathematics, science, history, finance and healthcare • https://www.khanacademy.org/

  3. Khan Academy

  4. For Teachers • Provides reports, practice problems and videos • Reports show the teacher student’s progress • Can help “catch” students up in weak area content • Helps free up more time for creative activities in classroom ““The core of our mission is to give material to people who need it.” “Instead of showing our students a better lecture, let’s get them doing something better than lecture.”

  5. For Students • Easy to learn and use in classroom • Gives student further instruction • Access to Khan Academy is free • Typically seen as more engaging than lectures • Help strengthen skills in their weaker subjects

  6. Additional Advantages • Wide range of subjects available • Open to critiques to keep improving the website • Acknowledges it is not a replacement of the traditional teaching method • “Personalizes the learning experience”

  7. Disadvantages • Not all students have a computer at home to access website • Expensive for schools to buy the necessary amount of computers • “Instructor and blackboard” method too traditional • Too early to tell if it makes a difference in student’s education

  8. My Opinion… • I would have wanted this in high school to improve my math and science skills • “I don’t like the way this teacher teaches” additional instruction • Students with computers at home at unfair advantage • Managing time on the computer and lecturing in a 49 minute period

  9. Questions • Do you think Khan Academy is “too traditional” for the modern world of technology? • Do you think it will prove to be an effective mode of teaching? • Can you think of any ways to further improve the website? • Do you think it will be more effective for high school students or younger students?
