  2. Why it Matters Early battles of the Revolution were fought in the Northeast. Now the war will spread South.

  3. Free and enslaved served in the American Revolution on both sides • British offered freedom to enslaved people who deserted and joined the British • Washington refused at first to accept African American soldiers. Why? • After British offered freedom to runaway slaves, Washington allows African Americans to enlist African Americans in the War

  4. During Revolution, many Northern states took steps to end slavery. • I.E. Pennsylvania barred people for buying new slaves but were allowed to keep their present slaves Freedom Beckons

  5. Enlist: Sign up for military duty • At first signed up for one year which made an experience military hard to maintain. Why? • Civilians: People not in military • Hardships were wide spread with food shortages and military attack. The War at Home

  6. Women often took over Men’s jobs: farms and businesses • Some even went to war with their husbands • Deborah Sampson joined army disguised as a man Women

  7. Who is going to pay for war • How is Congress going to support war effort • Continentals were worthless Financial Burdens

  8. Not just fighting in the 13 states • Fighting occurred in the West • Although America wanted to keep Native Americans neutral, even payment would not keep Native Americans with siding with Britain. • Why? Fighting in the West

  9. Smallpox epidemic spread quickly among soldiers starting in Quebec 1775. • By 1779, spread all the way to New Orleans • More people died of this disease in the American Revolution than battle casualties. • By 1782 more that 130,000 died • Only 8000 soldiers died from battle wounds Small Pox, oh No!

  10. George Rogers Clark: Virginian that led attacks in the West • Captured Ft. Vincennes which allowed American claim in the Ohio River Valley strengthen • Spain declares war on Britain with the intention of gaining Florida • Provide funds and ammunition. Defending the Frontier

  11. Unofficial help from Spain which allowed supplies to enter the USA by the means of the Mississippi River • Bernado de Galvez: LA governor that helped to capture key forts in the West • Spanish Cuba helped financially Help from the Spanish
