The Puritans in America. Puritans came to the New World by working for companies that had the right to create colonies. They were allowed to create their own rules so long as they worked and became profitable. Early American Colonies.

  1. The Puritans in America Puritans came to the New World by working for companies that had the right to create colonies.

  2. They were allowed to create their own rules so long as they worked and became profitable.

  3. Early American Colonies • Jamestown 1607- Essentially a trading settlement with no specific religious design or purpose., • Plymouth 1620 & Massachusetts Bay 1630- Founded by Puritans. They will dominate the regions politics for the next 100 years.

  4. The Puritan Covenant with God COVENANT: An agreement, usually formal, between Two or more people. Usually to do or not do something specific. • To establish a holy society • Based upon hard work, duty, honesty and moderation in dress and drink • Waged war against the flesh and the Devil (See how that fits well with making a profit for the companies?)

  5. Other Puritan Beliefs (Martin Luther and John Calvin ) • The Puritan Ethic –Hard work and Godly Discipline. • Predestination • God knows the day you are born • Life is for you to discover whether you are saved or damned. (Wealth and success) • Successful people have earned God’s Favor. • Visible Saints, Civil Man and the damned.

  6. The Puritan Commonwealth • The community worked together for common good • The Congregation is the basic unit • Congregations established towns. • Town meetings made laws to govern (all) aspects of life. • Ministers delivered sermons providing instruction in “the New England Way”

  7. Puritan Education • Education maintained the Puritan Way. • Everyone must learn to read in order to read the bible. • Harvard College was founded in 1636 to train ministers.

  8. The Puritans Created Institutions to… • Maintain their way of life. • Teach their values.
