  9. Assignment #1: Middle Ages to Renaissance (BINDER PAPER) TAKE NOTES: Middle Ages: 500-1450 Late Middle Ages called “Dark Ages” Renaissance: Begins in 1450 DISCUSS: The late middle ages have been called a “Dark Age” The Renaissance has been called a “rebirth” or Golden Age What features would characterize this?

  10. A quick assignment to begin Write down 1 fact about the Middle Ages. ( years 500 -1450). You will share this fact with the class. You have 5 minutes to remember/search for your fact. The fact can be: Something you remember from Middle School Something you look up on your phone Something you know from a book or visiting a place It can be about the way people lived, a large trend or event, a person or a group…anything goes. The fact should not be the very first thing the internet tells you when you type in „Middle Ages“ - you want to try to have something different from other people.

  11. Time for your middle ages facts….

  12. Features of Middle Ages Society: What do the pictures tell you or remind you about? TAKE NOTES

  13. Renaissance scholars, or Humanists, nicknamed this time period the “Dark Ages.” OK, no social mobility, and the Black Death was not no picnic…but other events qualified it for the “Dark Age” title...: The all powerful church starts to squabble about who is in charge. The Italians want an Italian pope and the French want a French one. For many this Great Schism shows the corruption and greed in the church. 100 Years War: A nasty war between England and France over territory. It established France and England as nations kills Joan of Arc and is the first war with gunpowder. Lasted 120 years – ouch.

  14. The “birth” of the Renaissance • Black Plague led to 1/3 of Europe’s population dying. • People that survived had more free time, more resources and more land. • This ushered in a rebirth of thought, literature and art. • Renaissance thinkers liked to hate on the recent past (Middle Ages) and compare themselves with the glory of the ancient world – Greece and Rome

  15. Take out HW notes Compare HW Notes Add to HW Notes using unit calendar Go over how to use unit calendar

  16. Definition of Renaissance Humanism • Renaissance writers, artists and philosophers were guided by the idea of Humanism which was • Human achievements are unique and worthy of study and contemplation. • Artists, writers and philosophers should look to the ancient world for inspiration. Humans are awesome. Ancient humans are the awesomest.

  17. Connecting to our time.... During the Renaissance, writers and artists shaped culture. Who shapes our culture today? How?
