  1. « TReSS »ATMOSPHERIC OPTICAL REMOTE SENSING TRANSPORTABLE-MOBILE PLATFORM Pierre H. Flamant, Claude Loth Juan Cuesta, Dimitri Edouard, Florian Lapouge* Lidar, Meteorology and Geophysics Team (LiMAG) Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique

  2. OPTICAL REMOTE SENSING PAYLOAD • Ground based platform easily transportable • All sky monitoring capability (but not precipitation reaching the ground !) • Lidar-radiometry Synergism • Mini-Lidar (designed & built in house using off the shelf components) • 3 elastic back. channels: 2 x 532 nm (total + ), 1064 nm, • One Raman back. channel: 607 nm, at night (day ?) • Sunphotometer (AERONET/PHOTON) 8 channels: 340, 380, 440, 500, 670, 870, 936 & 1020 nm • Pyranometer • IR radiometer (day/night): 9.5 – 11.5 µm, 2° FOV • Optical Depth Sensor (day/moon) • Web Cam: monitoring clear or cloudy sky, cloud track wind

  3. MINI-LIDAR

  4. OBJECTIVES • Science Objectives • ABL dynamics, Aerosols life cycle and cloud interaction, cirrus life cycle, aerosols & clouds Radiative properties, … • AMMA in 2006 (African Monsoon) • Calipso & A-Train Validation • Requirements • All sky monitoring capability (but no precipitation …) • Turn key operation, Hands-off operation • Real time monitoring (on going) • Easy caring and low cost operation • Easy to transport for field experiments • High time resolution: 10 sec averaging (or 200 shots) about 50 m

  5. LIDAR TIME SERIES (1/2) Relative calibration using computed molecular backscatter signals (radiosondes or analysis

  6. LIDAR TIME SERIES (2/2) Saharan dust Saharan dust Siberia/North American dust

  7. TRANSPORTABLE-MOBILE PLATFORM 20’sea container Adverse & bad weather condition Light Mobile Platform Fair & friendly weather condition A dedicated hard wall mobile platform is under purchase to be available for the CALIPSO validation in France mid 2005 2 min to put up or down the mobile platform equipped with TReSS remote sensors Truck loaded with Mobile Platform ready to go Truck and driver to be provided by École Polytechnique But rental trucks are available in case of schedule conflict

  8. « TReSS » LEVEL 1 & 2 PRODUCTS • Mini-Lidar • Apparent Backscatter (normalized) • Depolarization ratio • Color Ratio • Cloud and Aerosol mask • Scene classification • Radiometers • Aerosol Optical Thickness (Visible and near IR) • Solar Flux (Direct + Diffuse) / Shortwave atmospheric transmission • IR effective Radiance / Brightness temperature • Synergism • Cloud & aerosols back.-to-extinction ratio • more, operational algos under development by Juan Cuesta…
