Veterinary Medicine in China The first and highest stratum consists of four universities with colleges of veterinary medicine under the direct administration of the Chinese Department (Ministry) of Education. They are located as follows: • China Agricultural University (CAU), Beijing • Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province • Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan City, Hubei Province • South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province

  32. Veterinary Medicine’s Contributions to Human Health • Zoonoses prevention and control • Food protection • Environmental hazards • Emergency and disaster services

  33. 1. Zoonoses Prevention and Control • Over 150 diseases are zoonotic and more are emerging each year. • People and animals live close together. • Early detection and control of these diseases in animals also reduces risks to people.

  34. 2. Food Protection • Food borne diseases continue to be a significant public health problem. • Changing technology and methods of food production have given new pathogens opportunities. • The safety of food starts at the farm where potential pathogens must be detected and controlled.

  35. 3. Environmental Hazard Prevention and Control • Environmental factors are increasingly being recognized as serious threats to human and animal health. • Environmental contaminants have been linked to: • Cancers of humans and animals • Heart disease in humans • Allergies and asthma

  36. 3. Environmental Hazard Prevention and Control • Animals may serve as early warning sentinels of potential human health problems. • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) • Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

  37. 4. Emergency - disaster services • In times of natural or technological emergencies and disasters, all medical professionals are needed. • Such emergencies and disasters are inevitable for all societies. • Such events can be geographically limited or widespread.
