  1. Kindergarten Orientation Banks Road Year-Round Elementary

  2. Requirements for Entry • Birth Certificate • Must be 5 years old by August 31 • Health Assessment • Proof of Residence and parent photo ID • Immunizations • If we are missing a form on your child we will provide you with the form during staggered entry

  3. Immunizations • DPT- 5 doses • OPV- 4 doses • Hib- 4 doses • MMR- 2 doses • Hepatitis B- 3 doses • Varicella (Chicken Pox)- 1 dose

  4. Staggered Entry • Tracks 1, 2 and 3 staggered entry will be July 8-11. Meet the Teacher will be Friday, July 12 from 4:30-5:30 (floating). First full day is July 15. • Track 4 staggered entry will be July 29- August 1. Meet the Teacher will be Friday, August 2 from 4:30-5:30 (floating). First full day is August 5. • Your child will either have an AM session (9:00-11:45) or a PM session (12:30-3:15). • You will be responsible for transportation for your child. • No snacks or lunches needed.

  5. Initial Assessment Screenings • Fine motor (drawing, writing, cutting, etc.) • Gross motor (throwing, catching, etc.) • Print Concepts • Letter recognition • Basic Math Concepts • Socialization skills

  6. Materials Needed for Kindergarten • Book bag- no wheels • Towel • Baby wipes • Extra set of clothes (in a labeled bag) • Small pack of Expo fine-point dry erase markers • Ziploc bags (boys- quart and sandwich, girls- snack and gallon)

  7. Wish List • $6.00 for Scholastic News Subscription • Clorox Wipes • Hand Sanitizer • Glue Sticks • Kleenex • Paper Towels

  8. A Typical Day in Kindergarten

  9. Arrival/Dismissal • Students enter the building at 8:45 • Instruction begins at 9:15 • Dismissal begins at 3:45 • Procedures have been established to ensure student safety during arrival and dismissal

  10. Specials and Instructional Support Kindergarten students will receive regular instruction from Art, Music, PE, and Technology Teachers. Classroom teachers will collaborate with the media specialist and technology teacher to enhance learning and integrate media and technology into daily instruction. Instructional support is also available through Literacy, ESL, and Special Education Teachers.

Skills to Practice • Practice saying your full name • Write first name with capital letter first then lowercase • Identify letters of alphabet at random • Identify 8 basic colors • Identify four basic shapes • Count to 30 or more • Identify numbers to 10 at random • Concepts of Print (handout in folder) • Read to your child daily • Begin learning contact information (parents’ names and phone number)

  13. Important Facts • Transportation- Notes from parents must be provided every time there is a change in transportation. • Snacks- Please send one small, healthy snack in a labeled bag each day. Drinks are optional. • Volunteering- If you would like to volunteer, you must complete the background check in the office every year. More information about volunteering will be given from your child’s teacher later. • Folders/daily envelopes- Please check daily and remove all materials. Folders and envelopes are to be returned the following school day. • You will receive a welcome packet at Staggered Entry containing more information.
