Overview of the Summer & Early Fall 2013 ELL Recommendation Work • Leadership & Strategic Direction • The ELL team has increased by 3 for a total of 5 ELL Specialists • Curriculum & Instruction • ELD instruction is being implemented in grades 2-12 • A document has been developed and shared with HS regarding how to make accommodations for ELLs in Senior Research based on language proficiency level • & 20. Overview of the Summer & Early Fall 2013 ELL Recommendation Work • Curriculum & Instruction (continued) • The ELL Program Brochure distributed to parents at Registration has been redesigned to be more family friendly • Program Design and Delivery • The Elementary ELL team continues to support Mayor’s Leyendo initiative at C. Lauro & A. Messer • Program Support & Monitoring • ELL TLs have increased from 2 schools in 2012-13 to 8 schools in 2013-14 with the goal of adding additional ELL TLs in the 2014-15 SY • The ELL Handbook has been finalized and is available online: • www.providenceschools.org/ELL

Overview of the Summer & Early Fall 2013 ELL Recommendation Work • Program & Student Placement • Revised ELL student registration procedure was designed and has been implemented since August • Staff was trained to support the implementation • The ELL office has begun to develop a guidance document for auditing foreign transcripts • Human Capitol & Professional Development • & 60. The ELL team has designed and is implementing 5 school-based PD modules 59. & 60. The ELL team is providing supports to schools during CPT • & 61. The ELL team delivered 32+ hours of PD during the Summer Institute to K-12 ELL teachers

Changes to ELL Community Leaders Advisory Panel • Format of meetings and schedule of meetings have been changed • Meetings will take place 3 times per year • Meetings will become work sessions so that the Panel can act as development partners on specific projects • The first work session will happen on 01/08/2014 • The Panel will work with the ELL team/Workgroups to develop an ELL Parent Outreach document for schools and the district • After each meeting ELL team will produce talking points for community members to share with their contingency groups

Changes to ELL Workgroups 2012-13 SY ELL Student Registration ELL Parent Engagement ELL Programming, Curriculum, Instructional Guidance & Professional Development Data & Assessment Secondary Pathways 2013-14 SY ELL Student Registration & ELL Parent Engagement ELL Programming, Instructional Guidance , Professional Development & Secondary Pathways Curriculum, Data & Assessment The ELL Workgroups will be restructured in order to ensure better communication and seamless efforts amongst the groups

Changes to ELL Workgroups • All ELL Workgroup meetings will happen after school and through online shared spaces (i.e. Padlets) • Eliminate use the ELL Chair/Co-Chair sessions in order to avoid taking teachers out of classrooms for extended periods of time • ELL team leads on each of the Workgroups will record and submit Workgroup progress monthly to the ELL director • ELL team will meet monthly to review Workgroup progress and to develop a formal update on the progress of the work • ELL team will conduct monthly reviews of the work as it relates to the recommendations and reprioritize the recommendations as needed

Overview of the 2013 – 14 SY ELL Recommendation Work • Leadership & Strategic Direction • Develop a draft School Board Policy on language acquisition • Curriculum & Instruction • Develop an ELL Progress Monitoring insert for report cards and develop specific guidance for grading ELLs • Program Design & Delivery System • Develop a plan for converting Transitional Bilingual Education programs to Developmental Bilingual Education programs • Guidance documents, instructional minutes guidance, and PD modules • Develop a plan to revive a Newcomer Academy/New Arrival Center for grades 3-12

Overview of the 2013 – 14 SY ELL Recommendation Work • Data & Assessments • Identify and implement a language development progress monitoring tool for grades K-12 (14-15 SY) • Program & Student Placement • Improve the identification and assessment process for ELLs • Relocate the ELL Office to the Student Information & Registration Center • Develop a guidance document with specific procedures for auditing foreign transcripts

  13. Overview of the 2013 – 14 SY ELL Recommendation Work • Human Capital & Professional Development • Develop a recruitment and retention plan with HR to secure highly qualified ESL & Bilingual teachers • Develop a plan to implement ELL program changes and develop a cost analysis for necessary changes in staffing • Continue SIOP PD for content area/discipline specific specialists • Continued curriculum work related to access to core ELA for ELLs in grades 6-12; specifically accommodations for varying levels of language proficiency • Parents & Community • Continue to grow ELL Parent Advisory Council • 7 parents and students have self-identified a desire to become part of the core leadership team
