  2. There are two main players in the field of Mortuary Science and yes, you MUST know the difference between the two.

  3. Mortician • Also called funeraldirectors or undertakers • Provide support to the family of the deceased • Arrange and direct the funeral service

  4. Embalmer • Prepare the body for interment (burial) • Replace the blood with embalming fluid to preserve the body.

  6. Ways to get a RN license • Diploma program • Associate’s degree • Bachelor’s degree • Some nurses choose to continue their education beyond theses levels and become advanced practitioners. Examples?

  7. What does the RN do ? • Work under the direction of the doctor • Supervise other nursing personnel • Teach patients about health care • Provide total care to patients • Provide treatments and meds.

  8. RN’s may choose to specialize their careers. We will explore a few of their many options. All of these nurses must have additional training.

  9. Nurse practitioner • These nurses are able to perform additional services under the direction of the MD.

  10. Nurse Midwife • These nurses provide total care for normal pregnancies- they even deliver the baby!

  11. Nurse Educator • These nurses focus on teaching in various areas of health care and with different age groups.

  12. Nurse anesthetist • These nurses administer anesthesia and work under the direction of the anesthesiologist. An=absence Esthesia=feeling or sensation

  13. A LPN works under the supervision of the RN. Their “scope of practice” may vary from state to state.

  14. HELP ME PLEASE … • Each level of nursing requires the help of a nursing assistant, they work under the supervision of the RN or LPN.

  15. Nursing Assistant • You must have a certificate to work as a nursing assistant- this can be obtained with 75-120 hours of class and hands on work from a state approved school. • Avg. salary $14,000 - $26,000

  16. Surgical Technician • These HCW’s work in the O.R. under the direction of the RN. They help prepare the room for surgery, position pts. and may even pass instruments to the surgeon during a procedure.

  17. Nutrition and Dietary ServicesText Section 4:11 • HCW’s in this field promote wellness by providing dietary guidelines, teaching proper nutrition and preparing a healthy diet for their pts.

  18. Registered Dietitian • RD avg. salary $28,000- $60,000 • Also called “nutritionist” • Asses the nutritional needs of the pt. • Plan menus based on these needs • Teach proper nutrition

  19. Dietetic Assistant • Work under the RD • Help prepare food for the pts. • Help pts. select menus • Clean the work area
