  2. POETRY SPEAKS TO THE SENSES e.g. A cup of hot chocolate, Steaming, Its warm breath kissing my face. POETRY SPEAKS TO THE HEART e.g. Silence is A friend in times of sorrow When all the amiable chatter in the world Bring no relief. WHAT IS POETRY

POETRY • Poetry looks different from prose because it is written in lines and stanzas • It leaves a lot of white space on the piece of paper • It sounds different like e.g. Repeat words: I see water, I see sky… Rhyme words: Ever go away?...Happy every day! Repeat vowel sounds: Lonely every day Repeat consonants: Sparkling silver stars Sounds: Crack! Splat!

  4. HOW DO YOU READ POETRY? • Ask yourself what pictures come to your mind? • What do you see and hear? • What does the poem make you feel? • Pay attention to the structure of the poem. How does it look on the page? Does it have a unique shape? • Pay attention to the words and sounds. Is rhyme or repetition used? • Does the poem follow a definite pattern of rhythm? Does it flow naturally? • Read and enjoy every word! 

WRITING POETRY • Prewriting: choose a topic (remember an important event or time in your life, or look at the world around you, or describe something you like or dislike, or think of a favorite person) • Gather details about your story (words like sweet smell, bright sunshine, etc.) • Writing: don’t worry writing the perfect poem in your first draft, say what you need to say about your subject (include senses, sounds, tastes related to it) • Revising: when you completed you draft review your work • Editing: check for capitalization, spelling, punctuation and grammar errors. Then write the final copy of your poem.

  6. CHECKLIST • Are all my ideas complete? Do they convey the feelings and meanings I want to express? • Did I use the best words and images to describe my subject? • Do all the words and phrases read effectively? (sound, words, senses) • Does the form of the poem add to its overall effect? • Does my title add to the meaning of the poem? • Then make all the necessary changes to your poem!

  7. HAIKU POEMS • A haiku is a Japanese poetry that presents a picture of nature. • A haiku poem is three lines in length. • The first line is five syllables. • The second line is seven syllables. • The third line is five syllables. e.g. Like a bad landscape With neither depth or feeling The world through one eye.   10. CONTRAST COUPLET • They are two lines of verse that usually rhymes and state one complete idea. The first line includes two words that are opposites. The second line makes a comment about the first. Some hours are too short, and some are too long. I wonder who it was that made the clocks all wrong.
