  16. ModernisationofanAbattoirinthePays de Soule, France Summary In a regionwhereanimalbreeding is essential for thelocaleconomy, themodernisationoftheslaughterhouseinMauleonmeantthatnewservicescouldbeprovided to localbreeders’ andnewjobopportunitieswerecreatedintheregion. Background TheeconomyofSoule, thesmallestprovinceofthePaysBasque, whichcounts some 14,000 inhabitantsdistributedaround 35 municipalities, is principallybased on animalbreeding. ThemodernisationoftheabattoirinMauleonrepresentsanimportantboost for thelocaleconomy. Theabattoirwasfirstimprovedin 2003 withtheconstructionof a newmeat-cuttingroom. But by 2009 itwasclearthatthefacility no longermettheusers’ needs, bothintermsofcapacityandservicesoffered. Objective Themainobjectiveoftheprojectwas to modernisetheslaughterhouseanddiversifytheservicesofferedinordertobettermeetitsclients’ expectations, particularlywithregards to theirdesiretomoveintothedirectsalesbusiness. Otherimportantobjectiveswere to: i) saveenergyandwater; ii) reducewasteandodour; andiii) createnewjobsopportunities for locals. Mainactivities Themainmodernisationactivitiesinvolved: i) theenlargementofthemeat-cuttingroomandthepackagingroom; ii) therefurbishmentofthebuildingandreorganisationoftheproductionlines; iii) theinstallationofnewequipment, such as a vacuum-wrapmachineandanautomaticlabellingmachine; andiv) theinstallationofnewequipment to reducetheenvironmentalimpact, such as anoil-petrol separator to purifywaterand a lightingsystemusingmotiondetectors. Results & Benefits Theabattoirwasenlarged, thecuttingandpackagingroomswereincreased to 600 m2 whichmeansthat 2,600 tonnesofmeatcanbeprocessesperyear. Thenewcuttingroomalsooffers some newservices to users. Meat is cutaccordingtheuser’s requirements - whether for theirconsumptionand/or for direct sale – thenvacuum-wrappedandstockedin a coldroomready for collection. 17. IncreasingcompetitivenessthroughIntegratedSupply-Chain: thefigofCosenza Summary TheproductionoffigsinCosenzahasbeenfalling. Theprojectcontributed to reversingthisthroughthecreationofanorganised -supplychain, byintroducingnewproductionmethods, andstrengtheningcooperationbetweenstakeholders. Background Lowprofitability, smallfamilyholdings, anddifficultieswithgenerationalrenewal are all factorsthathavecontributed to thefallingproductionoffigs, thetypicalproductofCosenza, sincethe 1990s. A rangeofpublicandprivatesectorstakeholders (includingproducers groups, singlefarmers, foodprocessors, theregionalagency, andthe LAG) tookthedecision to work togetherinorder to reverse thistendencyofabandoningtheregionandthecultivationofthistraditionalproduct. Objective Thebroaderaimsofthisintegratedprojectwere to: i) promoteproductiondiversificationandquality; ii) strengthenlocalentrepreneurship. Withthespecificobjectivesbeing to: set upanorganisedsupplychain; createtheProtectedDenominationofOrigin (PDO) label “FichidiCosenza”; introducemodernandinnovativecultivationmethodsandincreasetheprofitabilityoffigproduction; redistributein a more balancedandequitablefashionthefinancialmarginsacrossthesupplychain. Mainactivities Themainactivitiesofthisintegratedprojectwere: thedefiningandimplementationofthe PDO productionregulations; theintroductionofnewproductionsystems, sterilizationtechniques, andinnovativepackaging; therestructuringofthedryinggreenhouses; thecreationofadvisoryservices for thefigfarmers; thedisseminationofthenewideasdevelopedinthisproject; participantsintheprojectbenefitedfromfundingcomingfromseveral RDP measures, specifically 111, 114, 123, and124 Results & Benefits Theactionsofthisprojectresultedinseveralpositives for thefigproductionsector. Firstlythecreationofanorganisedsupplychainandtherecognitionofthe PDO fostered a newfoundcooperationbetweenthedifferentpartiesinvolvedinthesector. This led to a greater transfer ofknowledgeandexperiencesandalsothecreationofnewmarketopportunities. 18. ProcessingPlant for AddingValue to Citrus by-products Summary Theinstallationof a processingplant for treatingbyproductsofthe citrus agri-foodindustryhascontributed to generatevalueaddedofsuchwasteproductsandtheir alternative use as input for animalfeed, essentialoilsandtreatedwater. Background Citrotecno is a companythatwasborn as aninitiativeof a groupofentrepreneursfrom Valencia, traditionallyengagedintheagricultureandlivestocksectors. Theircommitment to thesesectorsandconstantsearch for innovativesolutionshas led to theidentificationanddevelopmentofmoderntechnologiesandresearchprocessesthathelpaddressthespecificneedsandissuesin a more efficientandeffectivemanner. Objective Theoverallobjectiveofthisprojectwastheintegratedprocessingofresidualsgeneratedfromthe citrus processingintheagri-foodindustry. Throughthisinvestment citrus residuals are collectedandprocessedsuch as pulpandpeel. As a resultby-products are extractedthatareutilised as raw material for animalfeed, second-generationbioethanol, D-limonene, essentialoilsandpurifiedwaterthat is suitable for drinkingandirrigation. Mainactivities Theprojectsinvolvestheconstruction, installationandrunningof a processingplant for theextractionof citrus by-products. Citrotecnowillcontactmanufacturersofjuicesandhorticultureproducerswho are interestedinusingthistechnology for obtaininghighvalue citrus by-products. Theprocessingplantwasdesignedwith a capacityofaround 15 to 25 tonsperhour, which is believed to bethe most costeffectiveandable to haveanadequatereturn on investment. Results & Benefits Thisnewandmoderntechnologyprocessingplantwasreceivedwithanencouragingresponsefromoperatorsinthesector. Ithelpedcompaniesobtainenvironmentalcertification for treatingwaste/by-products. As a result, there is a highdemand to procure thisequipment. It is estimatedthattheplantwillreach a capacityofabout 40 tons/hourwith 6,800/7,500 hoursof work everyperyear. Lessonslearnt Despitefinancialandtechnicaldifficulties, thecreativityandcommitmentoftheentrepreneurshas led to a successfulprojectimplementation. Inaddition, theyhaveopenedupnewlinesofresearchexploringthefeasibility for processingresidualsfromotherhorticulturalproducts (e.g. melon, pineapple) as well as otheragriculturalresiduals (e.g. lettuce, rice straw) thatconstitute a seriousenvironmental problem for theValencianregion. Background Theproject is partoftheProcessingand Marketing Grant (PMG) schemeoftheWelsh RDP whichprovidesfinancialassistance for capitalinvestmentsthataddvalue to agriculturalandforestryproducts. TheseinvestmentsenableprimaryproducersinWales to addvaluetotheiroutputs. Objective Thekeyobjectivesofthisinvestmentincludetheenhancementoftheproductionfactorsresultinginimprovedperformanceandcompetitivenessofthebusiness.
