A Visit for 5- 9 year olds. Hadrian’s Wall at Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum. From the Fort to the Wall Either the whole class or small groups can leave the fort to visit Hadrian’s Wall. It is a 2 min walk from the West Gate of the fort, across the zebra crossing to the Wall site.

  1. A Visit for 5- 9 year olds Hadrian’s Wall at SegedunumRoman Fort,Baths& Museum

  2. From the Fort to the Wall Either the whole class or small groups can leave the fort to visit Hadrian’s Wall. It is a 2 min walk from the West Gate of the fort, across the zebra crossing to the Wall site. • Here is the section of Hadrian’s Wall the children would look at. • The Roman remains are on the ground. • The tree stumps mark where the Romans dug pits and filled them with thorny branches. • A wall has been built by the archaeologists. There are steps to climb to the top.

  3. Children imagine they are a Roman soldier living on Hadrian’s Wall. They have to decide which emotions they would be feeling working on the Wall. In small groups of 2-3 children, they choose the emotion face card they think they would feel.

  4. Later on the children can come together as a whole class, where they will have circle time and discuss what emotions different groups have chosen. This activity gives the children the chance to think about emotions and empathy, and share a discussion about emotions in small and large groups

  5. Circle Time- Discussion Carpeted area where the circle time can take place in the Roman Gallery. All the different groups come together, and the class teacher will help initiate discussion. Children can compare which emotion face cards they chose at Hadrian’s Wall. This allows for the children to learn to respect each others different options.

Hadrian's Wall Emotion Activity Emotion Face Cards- Resources • The next slides provide 4 Face Cards: • Each face can be laminated and all tied together into a pack. • Two of the faces can have double meanings depending on what you think the children in your class will understand the faces to symbolise. • The activity can be simplified by using less faces, e.g. just using happy and sad faces or developed using more faces of your own design.
