  2. Emotions People Hunt • Purpose of activity: • Activity example from Healthy Lifestyle Choices-Middle School curriculum • Emotions & Behaviors Unit, Self-esteem Lesson • Main message: everyone shares common emotions and positive and negative influences on self-esteem

Do We Really Need a Healthy Lifestyles Program? • What makes us unhealthy? • Is health about what we do or what we don’t do? • Health is more than not being sick. • Healthy habits established in childhood bring lifelong benefits • 60% of premature deaths in adulthood related to behaviors/conditions from adolescence.

  4. What are the top health issues facing Arkansas youth today? • Unintentional Injuries & Violence • Tobacco Use • Alcohol and other Drug Use • Sexual Behaviors • Dietary Behaviors • Physical Activity • Mental Health

  5. Unintentional Injuries & Violence • Weapons: 21% of students indicated they carried a weapon on one or more of the past 30 days. • 7% carried weapon on school property • Fights: 29% of students reported being in at least one physical fight in previous year. • 11% were in fights on school property

  6. Unintentional Injuries & Violence • Suicide: 14% seriously considered attempting suicide in year prior to survey. • 10% actually attempted suicide • Abuse: 16% reported they were physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend in previous year.

  7. Tobacco Use • 51% had tried cigarette smoking • 14% smoked entire cigarette before age 13 • 12% had used chewing tobacco at least once in last 30 days • 8% of smokers had smoked 10+ cigarettes a day in last 30 days • 8% used chewing tobacco on school property

  8. Alcohol and Other Drug Use • 66% of students had at least one drink of alcohol in their life. • 32% drank alcohol in last 30 days • 24% of students had first drink before age 13 • 33% had used marijuana one or more times • 16% had used during last 30 days • 8% used marijuana for first time before age 13

  9. Alcohol and Other Drug Use • 13% sniffed glue, breathed contents of aerosol spray cans or inhaled any paints or sprays during their life. • 18% had taken a prescription drug (OxyContin, Percocet, etc.) without a doctor’s prescription one or more times. • 26% had someone offer, sell, or give them an illegal drug on school property during year prior to survey.

Sexual Behaviors • 44% said abstinence is slightly important or not at all important to them at this time in their life • 50% of students reported that they had sexual intercourse • 8% for the first time before age 13 • Of the 38% sexually active in previous 3 months: • 58% used condom • 19% used birth control

  11. Dietary Behaviors • 15% were overweight; 15% were obese by BMI • 29% described themselves as slightly or very overweight • 45% were trying to lose weight • 59% female, 32% male • 14% went without eating for 24 hours or more to lose weight or avoid gaining weight in previous 30 days

  12. Dietary Behaviors • 18% ate 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day during previous week • 34% drank a can, bottle or glass of soda one or more times per day in previous week

  13. Physical Activity • 40% were physically active 60 or more minutes per day on 5 or more days of past week • 52% males; 29% females • 32% watched 3 or more hours per day of TV on average school day • 23% played video or computer games or used computer for something not school-related 3 or more hours on average school day

  14. Mental Health • 28% had felt so sad or hopeless everyday for 2 weeks or more in a row that they stopped doing some usual activities (during past 12 months).

  15. What Does It Mean to Have Healthy Kids? • Physical, social, emotional well-being Through the 4-H Healthy Living Mission Mandate, 4-H efforts engage youth and families through access and opportunities to achieve optimal physical, social and emotional well-being.

  20. Curriculum Overview • 2 “programs” selected for use in Arkansas • 5th grade, Second Edition • Middle school (grades 6-8), First Edition • Developed by non-profit organization Healthy Lifestyle Choices • Tested in school-settings in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes

  21. Overview—5th Grade • Flexible teaching settings (physical education/ health classes or traditional classroom) • Developed for grades K thru 5. • Utilizes the Social Learning Theory • Is aligned with the National Health Education Standards

  22. Program Structure—5th Grade • Includes six units and four core lessons per unit. • Designed to be taught once a week for 45 minutes. • Life Skills unit should be taught first because of the foundation skills it provides. • Other units can be taught in any order, but need to be taught as a unit.
