Some food for thought… • Girls have always had to negotiate the ever-present possibility that they will be sexually objectified • Being a girl and becoming a woman is harder in new times with new technologies and a ubiquitous porno-aesthetic embedded in mainstream culture • Contemporary paradox: girls as sexual subjects AND sexual objects

  13. In groups… • List words that represent ideas or images that you associate with the subject of developing nations… • Incorporate these words into visually graphical mind-map (turn the words into pictures).

Sources? • Where do you encounter images or information about developing nations? • What does the term ‘developing nation’ mean? • “A country with a low standards of living, generally indicated by severe poverty, low income and education levels, high birth rate, and poorlydevelopedsocial, economic, and technological infrastructure”.

  17. DEVELOPING NATIONS • This is a relatively new term… it replaced the older term ‘Third World’ • What negative stereotypes does the older term have?

Global South • Newer term that is often used when talking about ‘developing nations’ and ‘third world’ • What does the term global development mean? • When might developed countries assist less developed countries? • Food aid • Disaster relief • Promoting women’s rights • Building infrastructure • Ensuring access to clean water
