  2. Lost at the Legislature A teacher’s tale of adventure and learning in the Capital city

  3. The Story • The Public Outreach and Education branch of the Legislative Assembly of B.C. invites teachers from across the province to apply to a unique program offered in Victoria. • What is the Program called?Click!

  4. Day One • All the teachers met on the steps of the Legislature

  5. And then it began… • We were divided into teams and given all the information we would need for the week. • Besides learning all we possibly could from the program, we were given a task-- to create a classroom activity to share with other teachers….

  6. This is that Resource! • Within this presentation, you are going to discover a little about the BCTI.

  7. Day Two • The Chamber

  8. Around the House • The running of government requires the help and hard work of many people. The following people shared information about their roles at the legislature.

  9. Elections BC • We learned about the role of the Chief Electoral Officer

  10. The Clerk of the House • E.G. MacMinn, O.B.C., Q.C.

  11. Question Period • The teachers observed Question Period from the visitors’ gallery.

  12. Meet the MLAs • Our last event of the day was dinner with the Members of the Legislative Assembly. • Before we ate, we were welcomed by the Minister of Education and Opposition Education Critic.

  13. Day Three • Ceremonies, Traditions and History

  14. Meet the Press • Later that day, we had the opportunity to meet members of the press gallery

  15. The Sergeant-at-Arms • The Sergeant-at-Arms upholds traditions and order in the Chamber, and is responsible for many duties within the Precinct (around and including the buildings of the Legislature)

  16. Speaker of the House • Visit the Legislative Assembly homepage and find the Speaker’s link.

  17. The Lieutenant Governor • A lot of protocol had to be learned, and decorum followed when we went to Government House

  18. Day Four • The Laws and how they are upheld

  19. All Rise • We started our day with a walk to the Provincial Courthouse, where we met a Supreme Court Justice.

  20. Making the Laws • We met a Senior Legislative Counsel.

  21. Cabinet • We found out more about the legislative process when we were introduced to a Cabinet Analyst from Cabinet Operations.

  22. Day Five • Throughout the week, we learned a lot about many of the different activities that go on within the Legislature. • Our last activity was to share the learning resources we created. • We left the Legislature richer in knowledge obtained, and shared. • You can find many valuable teacher-made classroom activities on the BCTI website: http://www.leg.bc.ca/info/2-11.htm • And you can also apply to attend a BCTI session yourself!!
