  1. Most of us are aware of the damage UV rays cause to our eyes and the disorders it leads to, such as cataracts or retinal damage. And though these are more severe issues which are widely discussed, the season of summer brings a wave of eye disorders which you might not be prepared for. Though these are very common eye problems and easily treatable, they can lead to major issues if not detected and treated in time. Hence, it is always prudent to be aware of the signs and symptoms that indicate such eye disorders. Here are some of the most common eye disorders and how you can detect them: Dry Eyes: Our eye surface is covered with a liquid tear film that keeps it moist and prevents dust particles from depositing. But under the summer heat, this tear film tends to evaporate quickly, and the dry air is filled with moving dust particles to attack the eye surface. This causes severe irritation, burning, and redness in the eyes, a condition you know as dry eyes. If the eye surface continues to be dry, it can cause severe consequences to the cornea. It is always recommended to use eyedrops to refill the eye’s tear layer whenever you can during summer.

  2. Styes: A sty occurs as a pimple-like swelling along the edge of the eyelids and causes inflammation, redness, and pain. It’s a bacterial infection caused by the Staphylococcus bacteria. While the swelling grows, ti causes severe discomfort around the eye, and when it bursts, it discharges unhygienic pus and blood, which leave stains. Hence, if you develop a sty, you must visit your eye care hospital and get antibiotics and analgesic eyedrops immediately while maintaining proper hygiene around the eye. Conjunctivitis: Popularly known as pink eye, conjunctivitis can be caused either by viral, bacterial, or fungal infections and one of the rare conditions that are contagious and spreads from one person to another only through direct contact and sharing of objects. Since such bacterias grow more during summer, it’s more prevalent during this season.

  3. Eye Allergies: Since our eyes more prone to viral and bacterial infections due to the high levels of pollutants in the air during summer, it is natural to develop some eye allergies. Though most of these allergies don’t last long, they cause severe distress and vision problems while they persist. • Eye allergies are easily treatable and avoidable by following simple eye care tips such as: • Wearing UV-protected shades while traveling • Wearing swimming goggles while swimming • Frequently cleaning your house and maintaining personal hygiene • Avoiding repeatedly touching our rubbing our eyes If you live in Mumbai, you’re obviously more likely to suffer eye problems due to the ever-rising pollution and crowded streets.
