  2. Indentured Servants • Reasons for Indentured Servants A. To make money in the colonies many people grew crops. The more crops they grew, the more money they made.

  3. B. Colonists looked for cheap labor to help them grow more crops to make more money. 1. First they tried Native Americans 2. Then they tried Indentured Servants

  4. II. Indentured Servants A. Indentured Servants were usually poor people who wanted to come to the New World but could not afford to pay for their own way over.

  5. B. Landowners in America would pay the way for an Indentured Servant. C. In exchange for passage to the New World, Indentured Servants would work for the land owner for a period of time

  6. D. When an Indentured Servant had served his or her contract, he or she would be given a pair of clothes and some food and allowed to go and make a life for themselves in the New World. They were then called freemen.
