Part 4: The activity series • Turn to page 832 of your textbook! • The results of replacement reactions are summarized in the activity series. • Elements are listed from the most active on the top to the least active on the bottom. • A more active element will replace those listed below it in a single replacement reaction. We can use the activity series to predict whether a reaction will occur. • TPS: Where are metals on the activity series? Where are nonmetals? What other patterns do you see?

  13. Activity Series Example • Locate copper (Cu) and silver (Ag) on the activity series. • Which is more active? Will the following reaction occur? • Cu (s) + 2 AgNO3 (aq)  ?? • Answer: Yes! Copper is more active. It replaces silver. • Cu (s) + 2 AgNO3 (aq) 2 Ag (s) + Cu(NO3)2 (aq) • Think Box: Answer the think box question on your worksheet.

  14. Practice: Thumbs Up/Down • Will Calcium (Ca) replace Magnesium (Mg)? • Yes – calcium is higher on the activity series. • Will Lead (Pb) replace Calcium (Ca)? • No – lead is lower on the activity series. • Will Zinc (Zn) replace Nickel (Ni)? • Yes – zinc is higher on the activity series.
