  5. Module 1: Star Council as our Roadmap • NOTE: All membership and insurance transactions must be received, processed, recorded and released at the Supreme Council office by June 30. Module 1: Star Council as our Roadmap • In order to better serve our (members) and (parishes) and fulfill our mission as Knights, we need to have a (well-rounded) approach to the fraternal year set by the (5 key areas) of Star Council and their respective goals. • The fruits of a council structuring their calendar and goals off of these five areas will be an increase in • Member Retention& Council Retention • Historically, councils that stopped Reporting and fell out of Good Standing, first stopped succeeding in (membership growth), (council activity), and (promoting our of fraternal benefits). • ACTIVITY: Identify the areas of Star Council that proved to be the most challenging for you as a GK and, on average, for your jurisdiction. Share at your table

Module 2 – Council Retention • Successful council retention requires: • Promoting best practices • Identifying and supporting struggling councils • Consistent accountability • ACTIVITY: Best Practices Discussion • What does your jurisdiction do well at the state and district level to support and engage struggling councils? What works? What doesn’t work? What coaching do District Deputies need?

Module 2 – Council Retention • Best Practices: • Proactive approach – recognize and address red flags • Promote Star Council as roadmap for council activity • Accurate quarterly reporting with action items • Identifying potential issues: • New Council in their first few years • Stop reporting – Columbian and Fraternal Survey • Recruitment is down or at a standstill • On the 2nd year without recruiting • 5. • 6. • 7.

Module 2 – Council Retention • Providing consistent accountability: • State Deputy: • Promote Star Council as roadmap for success • Request quarterly reporting from Council Retention Chairmen and DDs • State Council Retention Chairman: • Promote Star Council as roadmap to DD’s • Collect and collaborate on DD retention report in advance of SD Report • District Deputy: • Promote Star Council as roadmap to GK’s • Set monthly touch point with GK on reporting • In meeting – identify issues and coaching points

In what area will they struggle? • Who is at risk for suspension? • What is your action plan to assist them in this area of concern? • What do we need to do to your suspended councils active again?

Module 3: Member Retention • Learning objective: Develop plan for membership retention utilizing the McGivney award as a roadmap for success. • ACTIVITY: Table Conversation - Why did you become a Knight? • Who brought you into the Knights? • What compelled you to stay active? • What was your first memorable experience as a Knight?

  12. Module 3: Member Retention • Successful Membership Retention Requires: • Promoting Best Practices, State Council Support and Consistent Accountability in these four areas: • Recruitment • Onboarding – “orientation” • Member Retention • Formation

Member Retention (Continued) • Onboarding: Best Practices • Shining Armor: Guide to new member activity • Be involved in at least three council service programs • Attend at least three council meetings • Receive their Second and Third degrees • Meet with their council’s insurance representative • Recruit at least one new member

Member Retention (Continued) • State Council Support and Accountability for Member Onboarding: • State Deputy: • Welcome new members – however you choose to do it • District Deputies: • Promote the Shining Armor Award • Encourage GKs to engage new Knights • Provide monthly updates for Membership Retention Chairman

  15. Member Retention (Continued) • ** Questions for your DDs ** • What are your councils currently doing to welcome new members? • Are they utilizing the Shining Armor Award? • How are you coaching the Grand Knights? • Have you discussed and documented best practices? And shared them?

Proactive approach through: • Communication: • Asking the member what they are looking for • Sharing what the council expects out of them – Shining Armor Award • Engagement: Do we know our members? • Shared worship – Mass, Prayer, Retreats • Meetings – vision for why • Events/Programs – Faith in Action • Everyday Interactions • Proper Billing Procedures: • Do we share “why” and what we do with it • Proactively remind before a deadline is missed • Fraternal Benefits: • Are we able to articulate our fraternal benefits and how great they are?

  17. Council Retention Committee • Proactive & Reactive • Meets: monthly • Made up of: Officers, Trustees, Chairmen • and/or 1 member for every 10 Knights • Discusses: Member review, Delinquent members& • who’s following up with each member

State Council Support and Accountability for Member Retention: • State Deputy : • Set vision and plan for member experience & retention • Promote state council support plan – See handout • Hold Retention Chairmen accountable for weekly Conservation Report • Member Retention Chairman • Oversee jurisdiction’s member retention plan • Collect feedback and Best practices for retention and share with DDs • Track weekly Conservation Report – Distribute to DDs and SD • Help DDs and GKs remain proactive • District Deputies • Promote retention committees and proper billing procedures • Encourage GKs to proactively engage new Knights • Hold GKs accountable to providing for Conservation Report

  19. Who is on your Experience team? • Pull your team together and ask that they meet and update the state team regularly. • What support do they need? What are clear action items for the state council to improve council and member experience in your jurisdiction?
