  1. Advertising is everywhere. On a daily basis, we are almost constantly being sold to by the advertising around us, even if we don’t realise it. In our society, we are always being encouraged, persuaded and cajoled to buy products, use services, donate to charities, be aware of government initiatives… Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, someone wants your time, money and attention. To get what they want, their key tool is ADVERTISING.

  2. So, where do we find advertising? There are a few obvious places… But can you think of any others? Write down as many places as you can think of that you may find advertising.

  3. So how many places did you think of? Did you get… On buses and trains On Websites Inside mobile phone apps Brand names on clothes, shoes and bags On pens/promotional merchandise The side of lorries Product placement in films Inside books On bins Cinema advertising Anything else?

  4. In advertising, the copywriters who write the text for adverts often come up with slogans – short, catchy words or phrases that are associated with products, such as Yorkie: It’s not for Girls or Burger King:Have it Your Way. Let’s see if we recognise which companies use the following slogans. 5. Can you think of any more advertising slogans? Write down as many as you can in 5 minutes. Now swap with a partner and see if you can guess which products the slogans are for.

  6. Another common feature of advertising is the use of logos. • Logos are images or stylised words used to represent a brand or product. We see them all around us, and most of us even wear them on our clothes and accessories every day. • Copy out the list below and next to each one, describe what the logo looks like (include colour where appropriate). • McDonalds 2. Cadburys • 3. Nike 4. Adidas • 5. Apple 6. Microsoft • 7. BMW 8. Renault • 9. Glasgow City Council 10.Your School

  7. We will look at slogans and logos again later in the unit. • We are now going to move onto look at how our key aspects of media relate to the medium of advertising. We will look at the content of advertising: • Categories – the form, purpose and genre of different ads. • Language the cultural and technical codes used in ads to convey the advertiser’s message. • Narrative – the ‘story’ of the ad – even in print ads! • Representations – stereotypes and non-stereotypes used in advertising. • And we will look at the context of advertising: • The intended audience for adverts. • The institutional factors which affect advertising. • The role of advertising in society.
