  1. Standard 5.7-Progressive Movement Progressive Movement- early 20th century movement to return control of gov’t to people and restore economic opportunity and correct injustices. • Movement of middle class against paying taxes to corrupt city governments and desired better city services.

  2. Standard 5.7-Progressive Movement Examples of progressive movement success/failure • Jane Addams and settlement houses for immigrants. Protection for child workers, but state laws were poorly enforced. • Theodore Roosevelt-1st president to give rights to workers. Carried out anti-trust act, worked out interstate compacts with railroad. • Booker T. Washington/W.E.B Dubois- education and opportunity for employment for blacks • Because of WWI most progressive initiatives stopped.

Standard 6.1 • Expansionism was to secure markets (make money) • Moved from isolationism to find raw materials and need for new markets for industry. • Because of depression, strikes farmers unrest (domestic tension) we needed to expand. • Social Darwinism influenced American expansionism saying Americans were superior to other cultures. • Imperialism idea emerged • Competition for European markets contributed to U.S. emerging as world power.

  6. Standard 6-1 Early expansion was due to land hunger, 19th century expansion was to secure markets. • We needed new raw materials and expanding capitalism. • The Spanish-American War also initiated our status as a world power.

Standard 6-2-Spanish-American War • U.S. involvement marked us emerging as a world power. • Getting Hawaii and Manila Harbor was a good fueling stop on the way to Far East. • Anti-imperialist said this was a waste b/c they wouldn’t be added to the union. McKinley said it was our duty to govern them b/c they couldn’t govern themselves. • Treaty ending war recognized us owning Phillipines, Guam, Puerto Rico, and U.S. control of Cuba. • Supreme Court said these people do not have the same rights as U.S. citizens.

U.S. wasn’t in that so.. • We wanted the sphere of influence to be open to all world powers. • This Open Door Policy was designed to help the U.S. economically. • We took a lead role in putting down the Boxer Rebellion.

Standard 6-3U.S. Foreign Policy in 20th Century • We intervened in several Central American countries to collect taxes to pay trade debts to Europeans so that wouldn’t use military power to get their money. • Roosevelt “Big Stick Diplomacy”- issued Corollary to Monroe Doctrine. • President Taft supported the dollar diplomacy-protection of our money invested in Latin American and we’d intervene if necessary. • President Woodrow Wilson vowed to use moral diplomacy in Mexico to teach them to elect good men . • We supported Panama Revolution from Colombia and controlled the Panama Canal until late 20th century.
