  2. What do you want to be when you grow up? • Work in the private sector? • Work in the public sector? • Work for a state agency? • Work for a federal agency? • Work of an NGO (non-governmental organization)? • Start you own business/firm/lab?

  3. With a 2-yr Rio Associates Degree • Transfer to another 4-yr university/college --most if not all GEN ED courses will transfer --some/most major courses will transfer • Hit the Job Market --usually entry level positions…and you stay there --you catch up on student loans/replenish savings…$$$$ --you confirm you want to continue pursuing this career track

  4. With a 4-yr Rio Bachelor Degree • Hit the Job Market --usually entry level positions…and you stay “education creditionals-wise” in a position to advance once you get the experience to match • You catch up on student loans/replenish savings…$$$$ --you confirm you want to continue pursuing this career track

  5. With a 4-yr Rio Bachelor Degree • You Enter Special Program, Professional School, or Graduate School Most require special application Most require having taken special test/exam Most require letters of recommendation from professors, employer, and/or others who can speak about your academic performance as well as your character and work ethic

  6. Some common EXAMS &/or Certifications • GRE = Graduate Record Exam (for graduate school) “Verbal Reasoning — Measures your ability to analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it, analyze relationships among component parts of sentences and recognize relationships among words and concepts. Quantitative Reasoning — Measures problem-solving ability, focusing on basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis. Analytical Writing — Measures critical thinking and analytical writing skills, specifically your ability to articulate and support complex ideas clearly and effectively.” https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/about?WT.ac=grehome_about_b_121009 (2012) • MCAT = Medical College Admissions Test • NPTE = National Physical Therapy Exam • Etc. • Start thinking about these during your junior yearwith plans to take them early in your senior year in most instances

  7. Why Must You “GO” More Years? • Competitive positions (teaching, research, medical fields) • Must have “minimum” degree requirements for a particular position or otherwise specialize training. “Minimum” here can be a certification or an advanced degree (Master’s, Ph.D., M.D., D.O., D.D.S, etc.) • To facilitate your advancement within the organization, agency, and/or company

  8. Build your resume!!!! • Rio Faculty A) individual B) collaborative • Rio Students A) class projects B) directed studies C) volunteering participation

  9. Rio Success Stories - Chemistry Andrea Merry 2013 Graduate • Currently in medical school at Ohio U. • If you could give an incoming (i.e., freshman) science major one piece of advice of how to succeed (i.e., learn a bunch) during their undergraduate years at Rio, what would it be? Don't be afraid to push your boundaries. I was afraid at first to try for what I assumed was impossible, but I've managed to succeed and have come from my experiences with widened eyes.

  10. Rio Success Stories - Chemistry Kris Kleski 2014 Graduate • Currently pursuing a Ph.D. at U. of Toledo • If you could give an incoming (i.e., freshman) science major on piece of advice of how to succeed (i.e., learn a bunch) during their undergraduate years at Rio, what would it be? Just like many things, you get out what you put in. If you're serious about higher education in science, you should be willing (as you are expected) to spend MANY hours dedicated towards it.

  11. Rio Success Stories - Biology Jordan Roush 2011 Graduate • Currently full-time biologist with USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service • Describe the part of taking a course you like the most. (For example: sitting in on lecture, participating in a lab, the taking an exam, writing a term paper, etc.). Why?I would probably say that writing term papers are what I like most about a course. In my opinion, you can learn a lot from term papers by reading well written articles by other scientists and applying what you learned into a term paper.  For me, term papers are usually a grade booster and I think that is why I like them the most

  12. Rio Success Stories – Wildlife & Fish Dan Eckstein 2010 Graduate • Currently full-time wildlife manager – Sugar Ridge Area with Indiana DFW • Served as Rio Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society President • Worked 3 seasonal positions after graduation…mostly in Colorado. • Currently responsible for managing a state wildlife area for quail, wild turkey, deer, squirrel, and cottontail rabbits
