Calculators • Current restricted list will be included with materials shipped from ACT (Calculator Notice) and in Taking the ACT • May ONLY be used on the Mathematics section (Test 2) • Use of a calculator is optional • Students bring calculator or school provides to all students • School Decision: Must be distributed as students enter the room, if your school provides calculators • May not be shared between students • Should not be cleared by staff before or during test • May be cleared after the test only if you suspect the calculator was used to store test items The ACT Administration Manual p. 31

NC Testing Code of Ethics • Secure test questions must NOT be used at any time during instruction or in resource materials • Room Supervisors CANNOT provide instruction related to the content being tested on test day • Cannot disclose contents of test or discuss with colleagues or with students • Cannot assist students in any way by indicating answers or rephrasing test questions

  13. NC Testing Code of Ethics Test Administrators • Administer tests according to the directions in the Administration Manuals • Report all testing irregularities to the Test Coordinator • Provide a positive test-taking climate • Maintain security of test materials

Testing Environment • Testing rooms should be large enough to accommodate all students • Students must be at least 3 feet apart • All students facing the same direction • Bulletin Boards related to potential test questions must be covered • Each room must have two reliable timepieces in the room (Only 1 visible to students) • Testing Do Not Disturb signs The ACT Administration Manual p. 5

Test Administrator Responsibilities (Room Supervisor) • Read the Supervisor’s Manual • Serve in one room during entire session • Attend training and briefing session at school • Check ID or personally recognize and admit each student into room • Direct students to specific, assigned seats • Account for test materials before, during and after testing • Time each test accurately • Read verbal instructions verbatim • Monitor students and materials at all times • Complete all required documentation The ACT Administration Manual p. 10-11

Proctor Responsibilities • Required in testing rooms with 26 or more students • Read Supervisor’s Manual • Attend training and briefing session at school • Help to admit and direct students to seats • Help distribute test materials • Verify the timing of the test • Monitor students • Report any irregularities to the room supervisor The ACT Administration Manual p. 11

Roving Proctor Responsibilities • Read the Supervisor’s Manual • Attend training and briefing session • Assist with check-in and/or directing students to test rooms and seats • Assist the Test Supervisor with materials • Monitor hallways during testing • Does not replace the requirement to have a proctor with 26 or more students The ACT Administration Manual p. 11

Test Security • Secure Test Materials • Includes ACT test books and answer documents with student identifying information • Seals may not be broken by anyone other than the student on test day • Staff and students may not disclose any secure test questions or answer choices to anyone • Authorized Access • Restricted to the Test Supervisor and Back-up Test Supervisor • Transfer of Test Materials • Prohibited without prior authorization from ACT The ACT Administration Manual p. 13

Locally Approved Accommodations • Accommodations may be provided without ACT review or approval if ALL of the following are met. • Diabetics that may need to eat snacks in the test room, Interpreter Cues • Student receives a college-reportable score • All Students with State Approved Accommodations will be removed for Testing and are already marked on your rosters. The ACT Administration Manual p. 23

Form A-1 KEEP in Bin (Admitting Students) • Students must be admitted one-by-one • Room Supervisor and proctor should direct students to their seat (Do not allow students to choose their own seat) • Identification • P- Current Official Photo ID • Issued by a school or city/state/federal government agency • Includes student’s first and last names • L- School Identification Letter with Photo • Completed individually and signed in ink by school official • School stamp or signature must overlap a portion of the photo • Signed by the student again on test day • Includes student’s demographic information • R- Staff Recognition • May be personally recognized by a school faculty member (who may not be a relative) The ACT Administration Manual p. 25-26

Prohibited Items • Calculators prohibited except during the math portion • Textbooks, foreign language or other dictionaries • Scratch paper, reading materials, notes or any unapproved testing aids • Highlighters, correction fluid or tape • Food or beverage (including water) • Cell phones or other electronic devices are prohibited for both students and staff The ACT Administration Manual p. 28

Prohibited Behavior • Room Supervisors must monitor test sessions for prohibited behaviors • Prohibited Behaviors must be documented on the Irregularity Report • May cause dismissal and a Voided answer document • Examples • Working in the wrong section • Giving or receiving assistance • Marking ovals after time is called • Removing test materials • Using notes or aids • Cell phone or electronic device The ACT Administration Manual p. 31-32

Student Emergencies and Breaks • Break after Test 2 • Must not include lunch • Testing must begin 15 minutes after the stop time of Test 2 • Students that leave the test session during a timed test may not be given the opportunity to make up any lost time • Only one student dismissed at a time • Collect test materials and recheck identification if necessary The ACT Administration Manual p. 32-33

Timing the Test • Responsibility of each room supervisor • Proctor may assist with timing • Full time must be allotted for each test even in the event that all students are finished before time is called • Each room must use two timepieces • Wall clock or watch • Stopwatch or interval timer • Timing charts are available within the verbal instructions for each test • Start and Stop times must be recorded in the Administration Manual Verbal Instructions and transferred to the Testing Time Verification Form The ACT Administration Manual p. 30

Test Administration • Test books must be passed out to each student individually in sequential, serial number order • During each test, record the start, five minutes remaining, and stop times in verbal instructions • Room Supervisors read from shaded boxes • Test 1 • Complete the Seating Diagram • Complete Item C of the Test Booklet Count Form • Test 2 • Periodically check calculators • Record times on Testing Time Verification Form for Test 1 The ACT Administration Manual p. 40-48

Test Administration • During the Break • Do not leave the test room unattended • Use hallway monitors and proctors to monitor students • Test materials are to be closed with the answer documents inside • Check every answer document to ensure that students have entered and bubbled the test booklet number and test form • Verify the test book serial numbers with the seating chart • Record times on Testing Time Verification Form for Test 2 • Resume testing no later than 15 minutes The ACT Administration Manual p. 49

Test Administration • Test 3 • Ensure that tests are timed correctly • If student does not return from break, collect their materials • Test 4 • Record times on Testing Time Verification Form for Test 3 • After Test 4 • Collect test books individually and verify that the student has signed • Verify that you have received all test books that were distributed • Complete item D on the Test Booklet Count Form The ACT Administration Manual p. 50-52

State Special Testing • ACT assigns specific test materials with serial numbers to each student approved by ACT to test with accommodations • Students must be tested separately from Standard Time or State-Allowed Accommodations • Only students assigned the same timing code may test in the same room • Group Administrations are allowed* • Proctor required for groups of more than 10 students

Timing the Test • Each Room Supervisor is responsible for timing each test • Enter the actual Start and Stop time in the boxes in the Verbal Instructions of Supervisor’s Manual • Document the time each student completes each test and calculate the minutes actually used by each student on the Administration Report (A-1.1) • If all students in the room complete a test before time is called, you may begin the next test or dismiss students • Students must all work on the same test at the same time (except Timing Code 6) • May allow students a break between tests

Multiple Day Testing • Each test must be completed in a single session • Student may not return to a previous section • Testing days do not have to be consecutive • Test must be completed in correct sequence within the testing window • Students who becomes ill • May return and complete remaining tests only • May not return to the test(s) that were previously administered

After Testing • Transcription of Responses • Must be accurately transcribed to the answer document in the student’s presence • Schedule make-ups for absent students • Ensure all documentation has been completed by Room Supervisor • Accommodations Roster • Completion of the Administration Report • Seating Diagram • Reader’s/ Interpreter’s/ Writing Test Agreement • Return all Materials to ACT • Keep separate from standard test materials and state allowed materials
