  1. We are all people first! People First Language Pledge I’ve thought about it—Words do matter! Sometimes they are harmful (even unintentionally) to people who have disabilities. So, today I am pledging to make some changes in how I think and talk, and will use PEOPLE FIRST LANGUAGE, to put the person first, not the disability. The examples below will help to guide me. After all, using PEOPLE FIRST LANGUAGE is about having respect and following the Golden Rule. • I will remember that special education is a service, not a place or person. • I will remember that “a disability is first and foremost, a diagnosis, and when we define people by their diagnoses, we devalue and disrespect them as individuals.“ *Kathy Snow, 2009 I make this pledge on _______________20___.
