  3. Common Nouns • Common nouns do not name specific persons, places, or things. • Most nouns are common nouns. • They are not capitalized (unless they come at the beginning of a sentence). • Examples: teacher, friend, president, actor. school, state, city, bank. cat, book, movie, dog.

  4. Proper Nouns • Proper nouns name specific persons, places, or things. • They are almost always capitalized (even in the middle of a sentence. • Examples: Ms. Littler, Casey, Barack Obama, Chris Pratt American Prep Academy, Utah, Draper, Wells Fargo Felix, Harry Potter, The Avengers, Spot

Comparison Common Nouns Proper Nouns Person: Ms. Littler, Casey, Barack Obama, Chris Pratt Place: American Prep Academy, Utah, Draper, Wells Fargo Thing: Felix, Harry Potter, The Avengers, Spot. • Person: • teacher, friend, president, actor • Place: • school, state, city, bank • Thing: • cat, book, movie, dog

  6. Changing Singular to Plural • Singular means one. Plural means more than one. • Rule AA: the plural of most words is made by adding sto the singular form.

  7. Rule A: Singular ends in s, sh, ch, x, z Plural form adds es

  8. Rule B: Singular ends in ay, ey, oy, uy Plural form adds s

  9. Rule C: Singular ends in consonant + y Plural form changes y to i, adds es

  10. Rule D: Some words totally change in the plural form. • Using a dictionary can identify the plural form of these words.
