  1. World War I The 4 Major Causes

  2. A Changing Europe • There had been many conflicts raging in Europe in the years leading up to the war • Many European countries had entered into trade and protection agreements • Alfred Noble (of the Noble Peace Prize) had thought that his dynamite invention would bring peace to European nations because they would be too afraid of using it and annihilating each other • Most Europeans hoped that the future would be peaceful but there existed too much ambition and mistrust for that to be realistic

  3. 4Main Factors That Led To World War 1 • Nationalism – strong feelings of deep loyalty to one’s people and homeland • Militarism –the buildup of armies and navies • Imperialism – the building of empires • The assassination of Franz Ferdinand

  4. Nationalism Factors • Drew people together • National pride was at the cost of individual beliefs • Was used to pressure people into actions for the sake of the nation • Strong nationalistic feelings could lead to racism and other prejudices

  5. Nationalism • Results • Strengthened the nation as a unit • Some people were willing to do anything for their country • Cultural differences could tear apart national unity • Growth of prejudices when disagreement with national ideals or policy

  6. Militarism • Factors • Countries build up their military strength • They are in an arms race to see who can have greater power • They were creating armies, navies, and arsenals of weapons that they could call on at a moment’s notice • This also meant building strong alliances

  7. Militarism • Results • European countries strengthen their alliances • Countries made political connections in order to be stronger than their enemies • Money is spent on military instead of other vital areas (medicine, school, etc) • Military can be given too much power

  8. Imperialism • Factors • European countries extend their territories in the 19th century • Colonies are sources of raw materials and wealth • Empires gave a country prestige and power • Wealth from colonies could be used to expand military

  9. Imperialism • Results • Frequent disagreements over who is in control of colonies • Battles between Europe’s great powers • World peace was threatened

  10. The Assassination of Franz Ferdinand • June 28th, 1914 Franz Fredinand and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo • He was the heir to the thrown in the Austro-Hungarian Empire • The terrorists who undertook the assassination wanted Austria to give up control of the area now called Bosnia and Herzegovina • Instead of giving up control, Austria-Hungary chose to take a strong stand against Serbia

  11. Reflection Question • Based on your learning regarding the 4 causes of World War One and your prior learning regarding all of the agreements and alliances between the European nations, explain why you think the “War to End All Wars” happened. (1/2 page minimum, full page maximum)
