  1. How to TakeGood Notes A Primer for Third Grade Mrs. Bueschlen

  2. The Big Questions • What is a note? • What is the purpose of a note? • How do I take good notes? • What are the different kinds of notes? • Where can I find good notes?

  3. What Is a Note? • It’s short! Pugs toy breed • It’s new! (Don’t write down what you already know.)Pugs=dogs • It’s important! Pugs have eye diseases

  4. What Is the Purpose of a Note? • Make sense of information • To learn: Do not copy-put in YOUR words Put information together Connect old information to new ideas

  5. How Do I Take Good Notes? • Don’t write in complete sentences. Ex: The two biggest rivers are the Yangtze and the Yellow Rivers biggest =Yangtze and Yellow Rivers • No need to write with beginning capitals or ending periods.

  6. Ex: Pug dogs are both black and brindle in color..pugs brindle black, color • The second most important habit is exercising your pug sport after feeding it twice a day most important habit feeding–, second important habit – excersizing

  7. Keyword Notes • Make sure the keywords are not too brief. You want to understand your notes when you reread them later. Ex: live in apartments(too brief)  live in apartments: don’t need big spaces, don’t bark much, small in size

  8. Quoted Notes • Sometimes it’s necessary to write down the exact text you read. Just make sure you use quotation marks to set off these direct quotes and write down who said that. Ex: “A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.” Gandhi

  9. Where Can I Find Good Notes? • Look for TEXT FEATURES in your sources. • table of contents • index • headings • subheadings • photo /pictures • captions • Sidebars • bold words • The topic sentence ( claim statement) in a paragraph

  10. Let’s Practice! Together, lets try taking good notes: Ex. More than 400 dog breedsare recognized in their countries of origin, but of these, less than half are recognized internationally for show purposes. 400 Breeds countires of origin used for show

  11. Let’s Practice With A Partner! • In major western countries, there is about one dog for every ten humans. Among the most popular breeds are the German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Boxer and Pug.

  12. Let’s Practice! • A mongrel has three or more breeds in its ancestry. In many cases one may be known, but the rest are not. Because the temperament of a dog depends a great deal on its breed, it is not possible to predict how a mongrel puppy will turn out. • Crossbreeds are the product of crossing two different breeds. One example is the thepuggle, a cross between a beagle and a pug..

  13. You Try It on Your Own! • Go back to your research and practice taking good notes. • Raise your hand if you have a good note you’d like to share…
