  2. Overview Preflop may look like the easiest round to play in Texas Hold’em, but most players fail to determine the best course of action at this stage. After the blinds are posted, every player receives two hole cards. Based on the strength of these cards, the player decides whether you want to continue playing the game or fold. Poker is a game of incomplete information. As you need to act without any information about the board and opponent’s hand, it becomes difficult to decide your next move. Here are the common pre-flop mistakes which must avoid in order to save yourself from losing your precious chips:

  3. No Preflop Strategy Most players believe in developing a strategy after preflop. It is important to determine in the beginning of the hand which cards you want to play, which to fold, which to raise. Also, you need to learn how to respond to raises/re-raises of the opponents. The game plan must be based on the dynamic situation at the game table.

  4. Limping Some players play the preflop round by calling the BB (big blind), which is called open limp. When you call, you add money to the pot, but also indicate that you are not confident with the strength of your hand. Player next to you can read your range and try to take control of the pot by playing aggressively.

  5. Undervalue Observation Preflop is the best time to observe the reaction of the opponents after receiving their hole cards. Their facial expression and body language can give some valuable inputs about the strength of their hand. In an online poker game, their action (raise/re-raise or call) tell us their strategy to play the hand. If you are in position, you can see their actions, analyze them, and make calculated decisions.

  6. Playing Too Loose Some players tend to raise with any two cards without considering their table position and opponent’s hand strength. By raising a hand preflop, you are committing yourself to the pot. If your opponent has a better range, you will lose your stakes. It is advisable to fold your weak hand if you face large 3-bet or 4-bet preflop.

  7. Playing Too Tight Playing too tight preflop and folding most of your average hands is also not advised. You may lose the chance of building the pot if you hit the flop.
