  2. Interpreters & Translators • Interpreters facilitate communication between people: listening & speaking (or signing) from one language to another • Translators work with documents: reading the text from a (source) language and writing its intended meaning into another (target) language

  3. What do Interpreters do? • Interpret at bedside/or clinic • Simultaneous interp. (in group sessions, teaching, sessions, support groups) • Sight translation (short docs) • Video medical Interp. (video conference)

  4. What we don’t do • Obtain consent • Make appointments for patients • Verify insurance information • Witness documents • Provide patient navigation services • However, we will interpret in all of these situations.

  5. Materials • Informed consents • Discharge instructions • Pt letters • Medical reports (MRI-CT-summary reports) • Marketing (brochures, signs, flyers) • Guidebooks • Information for pts • Chaplaincy, social work etc. • Scientific articles from Journals

  6. Transplant clinics (BMT, Kidney, Liver, Heart/Lung) • International Medical Services • Social work • Pediatrics • OB • Marketing/HR

  7. DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT • MULTI STEP PROCESS • QUALITY • CERTIFIED TRANSLATIONS

  9. Benefits of translated materials • Compliance • More comprehension • Less complications (and cost)

  10. Writing for a successful translation • Plain language • No ambiguity • No idioms, no double negatives • Specialized terminology • Abbreviations, symbols, units of measure
