NATURE OF THE CAREER • A secondary school teacher: • Teaches students in one or more subjects, such as English, math, social studies or science, at the secondary (middle or high school) level in public or private schools. This is dependent upon their specialty and certification. • Establishes and enforces rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order. • Instructs through lectures, discussions, and demonstrations. • Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests. • Information from www.mynextmove.org

EDUCATION AND TRAINING • Bachelor’s degree or higher • Some states require Master’s within a certain time period • Not all states compensate the same for advanced degree • Teacher Certification Exam • You must pass this exam for EACH subject you wish to teach • Professional or Temporary certificate • Professional development through school, county, state, or nation • You are required to participate in a certain number of hours of professional development each year.
