  1. Centre de recherche duCentre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CRCHUM) A hospital-based research centre oriented towards discovery, therapeutic innovation, non-invasive exploration of human beings and transfers to patients and populations

  2. Mission To improve the health of adults through a continuum of high-quality academic research. To provide a training environment that ensures renewal and a commitment to excellence.

  3. Vision The CRCHUM is committed to excellence in the development of new knowledge. In keeping with the mission of the hospital, the CRCHUM improves the health of adults through an understanding of etiological and pathogenic mechanisms, the development, implementation and evaluation of new preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, and health promotion. The CRCHUM seeks to foster cross-disciplinary exchanges and to harmonize laboratory research collaborations for the benefit of patients and the population.

  4. Main Partners Université de Montréal : • Canada’s second-ranked university for income by researcher • Largest faculty of medicine in Canada – encompasses all disciplines • 4th largest faculty of medicine in North America CHUM : • Quebec's largest teaching hospital • More than 500,000 patient visits annually • Heads up Quebec's largest integrated health network CRCHUM International network of partnerships and alliances with the academic, industrial and public sectors

  5. Major Strengths • Cancer • Infection, Immunity, Inflammation • Cardiometabolic diseases • Musculoskeletal diseases • Neuroscience • Public Health • February 2008 • The CRCHUM’s strengths and vision rated as “exceptional” by an external review committee of the Fonds de Recherche en Santé du Québec

  6. Major Strengths • Unique capacities in clinical research • Phase I/IIa/IIb trials • Phase III/IV trials • Optimal integration of basic, clinical, epidemiological and evaluative research • Unique integration of public health research • Highly cross-disciplinary and multi-sector environment • Enhanced recruitment and training potential • Magnet for partnerships with industry • Benefits for the population • Direct impact on health policy, care delivery and services in Quebec, Canada and abroad (developing countries) • Knowledge and technology transfers to users – population, public sector, private sector

  7. Evolution of research income ($M CDN)

  15. Research Themes Public health • Three themes: • Risks to health – ex: modifiable causes of cancer and HIV/AIDS, potential links between behaviour or the environment and a given disease. • Global health – action-research in developing countries – health care equity, maternal mortality, chronic diseases and access to health care, consultancy service for health infrastructure projects. • Health care system and services – health care system as a determinant of health, impact of modes of service organization on clinical practices, service quality and access to front-line services. • Integration of researchers from regional health boards and the Institut national de santé publique du Québec • Ensures the link between basic and clinical research with regard to the behavioural and environmental (social and physical) bases of disease development.
