What is lifestyle? • Definition “Lifestyles are patterns of (behavioural) choices from alternatives that are available to people according to their socio-economic circumstances and the ease with which they are able to choose certain ones over others” (WHO, 1986) • Topics relating to health - Diet, physical activity, obesity, smoking, alcohol, illicit drugs, sexual health, dental health Measuring lifestyle: methods and limitations

  4. What is measured? • Behaviour patterns (surveys) - How much?How often? Alcohol, smoking, drug use, fruit/veg - Who? Age, sex, deprivation at residence of respondents • Outcome measures - Mortality or hospital admissions due to alcohol, smoking, drugs - Tooth decay - Teenage conception Measuring lifestyle: methods and limitations
