  2. What are they?? • Rocks that have changed (metamorphism) due to HEAT and PRESSURE. These rocks form DEEP underground!

  3. Types of Metamorphism • Contact Metamorphism - Rocks heated (changed) by touching or being near magma. • Regional Metamorphism – Extreme pressure, occurs deep below rock formations or where Earth’s crust collides.

  4. Classification • Metamorphic rocks are classified in 2 ways… • Foliated • Non-Foliated

  5. Foliated • Mineral grains flatten and line up in parallel bands OR layers. Slate: Foliated (w/layers) Gneiss: Foliated (w/banding)

  6. Non-Foliated • Mineral grains change, grow, and rearrange, but don’t form bands or layers. Green Quartzite Marble
