  17. The mission of the ITU • To maintain and extend international cooperation for the development of telecommunications • To provide technical and policy assistance to developing countries • To harmonize actions of Member States and promote cooperation between Member States and Sector Members

The mission of the ITU • To promote at international level, the adoption of a broader approach to issues of telecommunications in the global information economy and society • World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS): Originally proposed at ITU in 1998 and later endorsed by United Nations • To extend the benefits to all the world’s inhabitants “Help the world communicate”

Budget • ITU has 189 Member States plus more than 650 Sector Members and Associates • Each chooses to pay a certain number contributory units e.g. US = 30, Malawi 1/16 • For Member States, 1 unit = CHF 315’000 • For Sector Members, 1 unit = CHF 63’000 • For Associates, 1 unit = CHF 10’500 • Main budget = CHF 163m in 2005 • CHF 106m (64.6%) from Member States • CHF 21m (12.8%) from Sector Members & Associates • CHF 13.1m (8.0%) from sale of publications • CHF 28.3m (17.3%) from cost recovery, interest, etc • CHF 1.5m (0.9%) from funds-in-trust (for development)

Internship at the ITU • ITU internship programme • The Union runs a non-remunerated internship programme for students who wish to improve their skills and gain experience working in an international environment. This programme is open to all undergraduate and graduate students from ITU's 189 Member States.   25. SPU Competition • Strategy and Policy Unit Competition • SPU launched its first essay-writing competition under the "Young Minds in Telecoms" Programme in November 2004. The competition is open to all graduate students and recent graduates in economics, political science, law, literature, telecommunications, computer science, information systems and related fields.
