  2. ANSWER In the magic square below, each row, column, and main diagonal sum to 100, where K, S, U, O, W, L, I, and Nrepresent (not necessarily distinct) real numbers. Compute N+S+O+L.

  3. SOLUTION Sum the middle row and middle column 200 = (N+S+O+L) + 2W. Another equation is needed to eliminate W, so sum all of the rows to get 300 = (N+S+O+L) + (K+ U+ W+ I+ 2009) = (N+ S+ O+ L) + (K+ W+ 2009) + (U + W+ I) – W = (N + S+ O+ L) + 200 – W. Thus, 100 = (N+ S+ O+ L) – W. Doubling the last equation and adding it to the first equation, we get 400 = 3(N+ S + O+ L), so N+ S+ O + L = . (Note that the answer is independent of 2009!)
