  2. A Clash of Views • Government and Trade • Parliament thought they rep all citizens • Colonists they weren’t rep since they couldn’t vote for Par. • England only allowed colonist to trade with Eng. • Colonists wanted to trade with other countries • Colonists were still loyal citizens

  3. A Clash of Views • No Taxation w/o representation • Britain indebt due to the Fr. And Ind. War • Increased taxes on the colonists to pay for it • Gave governors more power to collect taxes • Colonists thought this was taking away their property without their consent

  4. A Clash of Views • Steps Toward Independence • Colonists formed Committees of Correspondence • Communicate with in the colonies • Met for the 1st Continental Congress • Tried to convince parliament to respect colonists’ rights • Pledged to cut off trade with England – boycott

  5. A Clash of Views • A Year Later • Things still weren’t better • Met for the 2nd Continental Congress • Some fighting had already begun in MA - ??? • Many people were afraid to be independent • Thomas Paine wrote “Common Sense” • This changed many people’s minds

The Declaration of Independence • Support for independence grew at the 2nd C.C. • Wrote the Declaration of Independence • 4 parts • Preamble – written reason for the revolution • Natural laws of man – related to the enlightenment (John Locke)“right to life, liberty, and property.” • Grievances against Britain

The Declaration of Independence • Articles of Confederation • The states were 13 separate gov • 1777 the 2nd Continental Congress wrote the Articles of Confederation • They feared a strong central gov. • The National legislature was given power to: • declare war • Make treaties • Work out trade agreements between the states

A Limping Government • Problems with debt • Borrowed a lot of money to pay for the Revolution • Other countries lost confidence in our ability to pay our debts • Problems with trade • English products were cheaper • England did not allow us trade with any of its colonies • West Indies had been our 2nd largest trading partner

A Limping Government • Shay’s Rebelllion • Since farmers couldn’t trade their crops they went into debt • State legislatures raised taxes to pay war debts • Daniel Shay • War Hero • Leads farmers to courthouses to disrupt business (especially the business of foreclosing on farmland) • MA militia called into put down the rebellion • G. Wash thought the new gov was too weak • Many people began to call for a new stronger central gov.
