Strategic Plans to Date • Faculty strategic plan for research following DCU strategy  - adopted 6th February 2014 (Input from Schools and Centres via FRC and FMB to Faculty Strategy) • School strategies (implementation plans) based on Faculty strategy using our own templates based on RIS “playbook and scorecard”. Status: Drafted and circulated to HoS and Research Convenors *Contributions to main DCU Strategic Plan for Research and Innovation by EMcG on Research Committee and via feedback from FRC/FMB 

In Chronic Disease Management [Nursing/Human Sci.] • 60% of all deaths globally • 86% of all deaths in the WHO region for Europe (WHO, 2005) • 2020 - people living with chronic disease to increase by 40% • Set down as priority in HSE Strategic Plan (2008) • Prioritised in HSE National Service Plan (2012) • SoNHS - sole provider nationally in stand-alone CDM modules • Strong external support from stakeholders1 • Programme supported by Local Service Providers, Consultants, Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS), Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP) and Allied Health Care Professionals (AHCPs), (DoH), the Health Service Executive (HSE), the Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit (NMPDU), National Network of Community Intervention Teams, Beaumont and Connolly Hospitals, the Irish Heart Foundation, the HSE National Health Promotion Unit and Office of the Director of Nursing of Ireland. Research Funding Trend - Actions • What are we doing on the funding decline ? • Engaging with RIS in terms of performance enhancement and funding initiatives • Encouraging broader academic and research staff international linkages for H2020, via e.g., COST actions • Now engaging with Hubs and Platforms (especially STEP) to broaden funding base available to all academic and research staff • Hub directors to come to FRC in July to speak about the support they intend to provide – already visited some schools Governing Authority – June 12, 2014

  17. Postgraduate Research Student Recruitment Trend Table 1‑6. Registered Postgraduate Research Students 2009 - 2013 • Cost per SH PGR = €21.5k, €5.5k Fee and €16k Stipend • 300 PGR = €6,450,000 to be raised annually from external funds !! Governing Authority – June 12, 2014

Postgraduate Research Student Recruitment Trend • What are we doing on PGR number decline ? • Undergraduate research internships funded by FRC to prime students for IRC and other applications (now in its 2nd year). Priming the pump….. • Development of structured PhD pathways in each School to ensure competitiveness in IRC appls and also to future-proof us against any HEA moves in this area Governing Authority – June 12, 2014

Current Potentially Significant Developments • PRTLI V Funding €19M (National Bio-Analytical Research Facility) • Outcome - SFI Centre ENRICH Proposal led by BDI (R O’Kennedy & J McManus) • Developing PNU relationship on Nursing Education (and potentially research, CPD, etc.) Governing Authority – June 12, 2014

  20. Approach to Graduate Attributes within the Faculty What is our [FSH] objective for Gen21 ? To help develop graduates that are educated and skilled for our time but also prepared for and able to anticipate future challenges/opportunities……… Effective Communicator/ Active Leader ? International Engagement • Focus on those Institutes and Universities with which DCU has already signed a MOU – ASU, IITM, etc. • Lots of existing international research engagement – but open to expanding collaborations • 3 + 1 or 2 + 2 programmes where that is of clear mutual benefit – Started work with Shantou (M & P) • Education Export with e.g., PNU in Saudi Arabia – Phase 1 (Gap Analysis and Report Complete)… Governing Authority – June 12, 2014
