Workshop Format • Present “current” understanding of GW/SW interaction processes (through presentation of a number of papers) • Understanding and Quantifying groundwater’s contribution to baseflow (Roger Parsons). • Incorporating SW-GW interactions into the monthly Pitman rainfall-runoff model (Denis Hughes) • SW-GW interaction at small scales: implications for low flow estimates (Presented on behalf of Simon Lorentz by Kevin Bursey) • Develop recommendations (for research and implementation)

General Discussions • Proper quantification of groundwater resources in order to include groundwater component in the yield model. • The impact of groundwater abstraction of surface water flows and where does groundwater contribute to flows (including temporal changes) • Classification (good/bad) • Process vs. model studies • Terminology!!! • Data requirements for “integrated” water resource assessments • Technology Transfer of Research Results for WRM • Scaling issues (catchment vs. local-scale processes) • Exchange of knowledge and communication

Challenges • How do we bring groundwater up to an equal basis of surface water resource assessment? • Need to understand mutual influences between groundwater and surface water (including alluvial aquifers)? • Need to develop time series for groundwater? • How do we handle double accounting of resources?

Next Steps? • WR2005: to include more gw; sw-gw links • Need to bring gw yield info up to same level as surface water (conceptual level study) – gw potential map – gw assessment map • Need to document conceptual understanding • Models/Methods/Isotope techniques • Manage/promote correct terminology • Regular exchange of knowledge to broad hydro community. • Water quality!!! • Need to consolidate all research that has already been done • Baseline data/information
